Perpignan blurs the line between French and Catalan cultures. The meandering, palm-dotted Old Town is anchored by a rust-coloured, Romanesque palace—a relic from when the city ruled the Kingdom of Mallorca.

Perpignan, the Catalan capital of France (Barcelona is the capital on the Spanish side), is an attractive, city with narrow streets, abundant eateries, shops large and small and a seemingly endless energy. Walk through the arch at Castillet, up a street lined with the local pink marble to the Place de la Loge, where you can pause for a drink or a visit to the new Tourist Info Office. Or, just turn left and walk toward the cathedral square. There are some tables there, where you can plunk yourself down and gaze around Place Gambetta while you enjoy a sangria blanche or a cool Ricard. The Hyacinthe Rigaud Fine Arts Museum has just reopened after a long renovation, so I'd suggest that, too!

Perpignan This is the last major town in Languedoc before the Spanish border. It is very much Catalan with a real mix of cultures. There is an international airport here too with regular flights from the UK and Europe. Head into centre of town for fantastic restaurants, historic architecture and a lovely mix of French and Catalan cultures.
