Beautiful Cot valley, lovely to walk too, sandy when the tide is out.

Porth Nanven ( or Cot Valley as it is locally known) is a beach in the far west of Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is located half-a-mile west of the town of St Just. The beach is at the seaward end of the Cot Valley and is part of the Aire Point To Carrick Du Site of Special Scientific Interest. Cot Valley cove is something of a favourite with photographers largely on account of the smooth, round granite boulders that make up the shore here. Add in a backdrop of the twin peaks of the Brison rocks and the sun setting, and it's easy to see why. The granite boulders here have lead some to refer to Cot Valley as "Dinosaur Egg Beach". Coming in all sizes from fist-sized to huge these rocks were quite popular as garden ornaments until the National Trust (who own the cove) recently made removing them illegal.

Porth Nanven is commonly known by its generic name, Cot Valley and has a beautiful little cove. The valley itself is steeped in tin mining history where historic remains are preserved amongst nature. Cot Valley is approximately 20 minutes walk from Little Geo, there is a direct road that leads down so you can drive too but parking is not guaranteed and there are limited free parking spaces at the cove. It is a lovely walk and although it’s all downhill from St Just, the walk back is a little more challenging! If you follow the coastal path down there from Carralleck Lane in St Just, where the road leads onto the footpath, the path then leads you even deeper into the valley where you can appreciate sub tropical plants, beautiful glimpses of the ocean through the greenery and a gentle stream that follows the road down to the cove. Cot Valley cove has a beach at low tide (Google Cot Valley tide timetable). There are frequent glimpses of seals that swim very close to shore and ‘hang out’! Spottings of dolphins and basking sharks are also found here. At the cove at Cot Valley, you can also access the coastal path to Gwenver beach and Sennen Cove which is approximately an hour’s walk from the cove. Alternatively, if you turn north, the coastal path connects to Carn Gloose which is a stunning lookout point on the cliff tops where you can see put to the Longships lighthouse and Land’s End. Follow the path beyond Carn Gloose and you will get to Cape Cornwall.

Porth Nanven, Penanven, Cot Valley, you'll hear it called by various names, but this is the little beach at the end of the beautiful Cot Valley. Cot itself is so lush and peaceful today that it's hard to imagine it once being a centre of industry, but even 100 years ago the noise in the valley would have been deafening. Today the beach at the end is a quiet place, usually with a few locals taking a swim off the boulders, or from the beach at low tide. It's made all the more photogenic by the Brisons, the rock that dominates the view a kilometre off shore. Porth Nanven is of geological interest too as the cliffs are a great example of a raised beach, showing us clear evidence of the changing sea levels over the millennia. Why go here? It's on the South West Coastal Trial, it's almost always peaceful, and the swimming is good. Look out for coughs on the cliffs. Great at any time of day, but best in the evenings. Walk down Bosorne Street and keep going to the end, or follow the cliff path from Cape Cornwall.

At low tide a lagoon forms, which locals call the Mermaid Pool, and there are lots of other little pools to explore. It is easily reached on foot from St Just, while another lovely beach, Priests Cove, is also nearby.
