Do I need a license to take my guests to public areas or monuments in San Francisco?

No. As of the date when we posted this help article, you don’t need a license or permit to provide guided visits of public areas or monuments in San Francisco.

Do I need permission to give my guests a tour of buildings or attractions in San Francisco?

Maybe. You may need permission to provide guided tours of private buildings, certain public buildings or attractions which are open to the public, or to provide tours in certain areas of the city. Most of the sights or attractions you plan to showcase probably have a website or office number where you can learn more about guided visits; be sure to check with each location before bringing Guests.

What do I need to do if I’m taking my guests to a park or the Presidio?

The National Parks Service manages areas around the city as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), including:

  • Ocean Beach
  • The Presidio
  • Crissy Field
  • Baker Beach
  • China Beach
  • Fort Mason
  • Lands End

If you plan to take Guests on hikes in these locations more than four times per year, you’ll need a Commercial Use Authorization (“CUA”) from the National Parks Service. To get a CSA, you’ll need to have business insurance listing the National Park Service as an additional insured. The online application requires a $500 application fee along with a Certificate of Insurance and must be renewed every year (along with the $500 application fee).

We encourage you to check with the City before providing guided visits and with the National Park Service before taking Guests on guided hikes in the GGNRA.
