Make self check-ins easier by connecting a compatible smart lock to your listing. The feature lets you manage your lock from the Airbnb app and automatically create and send unique door codes to guests.
Listings with connected smart locks have an average check-in rating of 4.95.* The feature is available to all Hosts with listings in the US or Canada who use compatible locks from Schlage, Yale, and August.
Why connect a smart lock
When you connect a smart lock, guests automatically receive a unique code that’s only active during their stay. You don’t have to change the code yourself between bookings.
Connecting a lock to your listing also lets you:
- Receive an in-app notification when guests arrive.
- View guests’ door codes.
- Change how long a code is active by adjusting a guest’s check-in or checkout time.
- Keep separate codes for yourself, Co-Hosts, and cleaners.
- Get notified of any issues that might affect guests, like interruptions to the lock’s wifi connection.
How to get started
Choose a compatible lock from Schlage, Yale, or August that connects to wifi and has a keypad or touchscreen. You can’t connect a lock that only has Bluetooth.
Lock kits typically start around $250 USD and use AA or AAA batteries that you’ll need to replace periodically. Most work with single-cylinder deadlocks on doors 1⅜ to 1¾ inches thick. Some locks fit thicker doors—be sure to check the product specifications.
Installation generally takes less than an hour, and step-by-step instructions are available online from Schlage, Yale, and August.
How to connect a smart lock
The primary Host or a Co-Host with full access should set this up, because it requires allowing Airbnb to access and share information that’s in your lock app account. To connect a compatible smart lock:
- Go to the Arrival guide section of your listing.
- Update your check-in method to Smart lock.
- Select Connect and choose your lock.
- Tap Continue and log in to your lock app account.
- Review the information and complete the connection.
When guests receive codes
Guests receive their door code in an email after they book and get a reminder when it’s time to check in. They can also find the code and lock instructions in their reservation details, where we’ll show them how to use it.
Door codes are activated at check-in time and expire 30 minutes after checkout. Adjusting a guest’s reservation for an early arrival or late departure automatically changes when a code is active.
Make sure to add a backup entry method in your arrival guide.
