Fascadale Cottage by the sea

Built right on the coast on the ruin of a netsman’s bothy, the cottage boasts spectacular views of the mountains of Eigg, Muck, Rum and the Cuillins of Skye as well as the green and turquoise waters of Fascadale bay. The bay itself is stunning. Banks of rounded stones, cast up by countless storms, line the shore. At low tide a beach of pale sand, which gives the waters their colour, is exposed. This is where the boats landed their catch, to be stored in the ice house, which remains to this day.

Words don’t do this cottage justice, but the photos speak for themselves. The views towards the islands of Eigg, Rum and Skye are anything but humble however. Soak in the magnificent sunsets from the sun porch as the deer make their way to the coast to graze – you’ll find their hoofprints on the beach in the morning, alongside the tracks of otters and the prints of seabirds. This beach’s white sands, some of the most beautiful on the Peninsula, are only a short walk away.

Achateny House 250m from Beach

Originally the “big house” for Achateny Farm, the first thing you might notice on your stay here is the view to the north, across the sea to the islands of Skye, Eigg, Rum and Muck. Achateny Beach is just a couple of minutes walk away down a rough private track. This ‘deserted’ beach is actually alive with wildlife; otters are often seen fishing among the reefs here. To the west, deer graze on the open ground overnight, returning to the hills in the early morning.
