Our Favorite Eats
These are favorite places that my family likes to eat. Keep in mind that we don't typically like to wait long or have to dress up while we are on vacation.
When you want to get away from the tourist areas and crowded restaurnts, The Woodshed Restaurant is a great choice. It is a family restaurant run by a teacher. She teaches hospitality to students in a local high school to prepare them for jobs in the Gatlinburg area so you will see lots of teens working there. There is no need to dress up which is also a plus and the prices are reasonable. You may even spot some of the people in the reality tv series Moonshiners. They work in the area and stop by often to eat. It is only open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Hickory Cabin is a great place to get BBQ. It is a small restaurant tucked in downtown Sevierville. The BBQ is always good and the sides are amazing. The fried corn nuggets are a must have and the onion rings are great too.

Honestly our family loves Mexican good and bad. If we really want to eat the best in the area, we will go to Sevierville and eat at El Paso. The portions are large, the service is friendly, and the food is great.

849 Glades RoadThis is a great place to eat when you want to avoid crowds and not have to worry about parking. The restaurant is off the beaten path in the Arts and Craft community. They serve breakfast, unique and delicious sandwiches, burgers and salads. Don't forget to try their homemade donuts and cupcakes!
About 45 minutes from the chalet, Bush Brothers(think Bush's baked beans) has a restaurant, museum, and a company store. The restaurant features home cooking and southern recipes. They start you off with a sample of their beans. Their pinto bean pecan pie is a must have for dessert. The museum is small but worth the visit to see how the company started and how they run their factory today. Don't forget to take a picture with Duke! The factory store is a great place for souvenirs. We really enjoyed our time checking it out.

We love to hike and the Smoky Mountain National Park is a great place to explore. Below are some of our favorites. Download the All Trails app for more places to hike. The trails on the app are rated for difficulty and have lots of great info. to find the best trail fit for you!
The Clingmans Dome hike is a must do hike in the Smoky Mountain National Park. It is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The trail to the top is a half mile paved surface that goes straight up hill. It can be challenging so take your time because the views are worth it. This hike is very popular so parking may be an issue. We usually take the first free space we see. Be sure to bring water. It is amazing!

Things we like to do
We definitely have not tried all the many things things there are to do in the area, but here are a few of the things we like. We will update as will continue to visit our chalet.
There are lots of great places to play mini golf in the area, but we love Davy Crocketts. The courses are challenging and the decorations on the golf course are so cute. Most of the time, someone in our party leaves with a free game by getting a hole in one on the last hole.

Early morning or early evening are the best times to see the most animals. It is a must see while visiting in the area.
Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail twists and turns for six miles, forming a one-way looping scenic drive through the Great Smoky Mountains. The narrow roadway only allows cars—trucks, trailers. Unfortunately, RVs cannot fit on this road. Drive along the road and immerse yourself in the mossy green rocks and boulders as you gaze at the water rushing through the mountains. Check our Ely's Mill for locally made crafts that you can take home with you as souvenirs.

The narrow roadway only allows cars—trucks, trailers. Unfortunately, RVs cannot fit on this road. Check our Ely's Mill for locally made crafts that you can take home with you as souvenirs.

Also we had our two 9 month old grandchildren with us and there was plenty for them to do. As an added bonus, we got to see Dolly in person!! We think this is a great family outing. The park is clean and the rides felt safe. The cinnamon bread in the bakery shop is to die for! Make sure you get it before you leave.

Sevierville park is as great place for the whole family. During the pandemic, we became obsessed with pickleball. If you would like to play and meet new people, join the Pickleball of the Smokies Facepook group to find out when they are playing. We have joined their play several times and everyone is very welcoming. Also, the park has a wonderful playground for children and there is also areas for picnicing and easy hikes.

Where to get essentials
Food City is the closest chain grocery store to the chalet. They do seem to cater to cabin/chalet rentals with lots of pre-cut food and some great local items too. It does seem a little more expensive than your average grocery store so keep that in mind.

Cherokee is a town on the reservation home of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation. At Oconaluftee Indian Village, the 18th-century Cherokee lifestyle is preserved via live demonstrations. If you like to gamble, Harrah's Cherokee Casino is located in the middle of the town. Hiking trails, rafting, shopping and more make this a great place to visit for the day. It is just over 1.5 hours to Cherokee from the chalet.

Ijams is a 300 acre outdoor nature center where you can hike, bike, or swim/paddle board/kayak in an old marble quarry now filled with turquoise water. Knoxville is about an hour and a half from the chalet. Don't want to drive? You can take the Smokies Shuttle to Knoxville and back to Gatlinburg. Check out visitknoxville.com.

It is definitley worth drive to spend a day.

If you like to fish, the lake has been named one of the top five lakes in the United States for crappie fishing and ranks in the nation’s top 10 for large mouth bass fishing. There are several marinas in the area that rent pontoons, ski boats, wave runners, kayaks, paddleboards, and more. If you decide to go, make sure you check out Bush's Brothers(see under restaurants) for lunch!

You can eat at the Warden's Table restaurant(open 10:30 am-7pm Thursday-Sunday) and visit their gift shop. There is also a paranormal tour for the braver people in your group.

Mommy and Me Grocery Delivery
Mommy and Me offers grocery delivery to our chalet. Just pick a grocery store & put in a pickup order. This mother daughter team picks up the groceries and put them away in the chalet. The fee is $50 unless there is a holiday or a major event going on in town add $20!! (Tips are appreciated but not expected). It is a great way to save time and enjoy the area more.
