Our Favorite Eats

These are favorite places that my family likes to eat. Keep in mind that we don't typically like to wait long or have to dress up while we are on vacation.
When you want to get away from the tourist areas and crowded restaurnts, The Woodshed Restaurant is a great choice. It is a family restaurant run by a teacher. She teaches hospitality to students in a local high school to prepare them for jobs in the Gatlinburg area so you will see lots of teens working there. There is no need to dress up which is also a plus and the prices are reasonable. You may even spot some of the people in the reality tv series Moonshiners. They work in the area and stop by often to eat. It is only open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Fannie Farkle's has been in Gatlinburg for as long as I can remember. It is a game room, but they serve the famous Ogle dog(a corn dog), cheese steaks, and sausage subs that they cook with windows open right on the strip. It is great for a cheap and quick lunch.

Honestly our family loves Mexican good and bad. If we really want to eat the best in the area, we will go to Sevierville and eat at El Paso. The portions are large, the service is friendly, and the food is great.

This place is a definite must for ice cream. They have unique flavors like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, and Lavender Honey that rotate during the season. They also have a dairy free Dole Whip. You can sit inside or outside in rocking chairs to enjoy your dessert. Also, there are corn hole games on the deck that you can use. The Ogle General store is right beside it and worth taking a look in.

The Peddlar Steakhouse is a Gatlinburg tradition since 1976. Their steaks are naturally aged, never-frozen, and grilled over real Tennessee hickory charcoal. Although their steaks are wonderful, their amazing salad bar sets them apart and is included with every entree. They do have seating where you can view the Little Pigeon river while dining. You can check out their menu at Peddlargatlinburg.com. Because of the popularity of this restaurant, you may want to call ahead to check wait times.

About 45 minutes from the chalet, Bush Brothers(think Bush's baked beans) has a restaurant, museum, and a company store. The restaurant features home cooking and southern recipes. They start you off with a sample of their beans. Their pinto bean pecan pie is a must have for dessert. The museum is small but worth the visit to see how the company started and how they run their factory today. Don't forget to take a picture with Duke! The factory store is a great place for souvenirs. We really enjoyed our time checking it out.

Do you love pancakes? This is the place for you! Log Cabin Pancake House has been family owned since 1976. The restaurant is located just behind the convention center in downtown Gatlinburg. They have their own parking so no need to pay for it. There is no call ahead seating so you may have to wait in a line, but it moves pretty fast. Our favorite pancake dish is the Pancake Royale - their old fashioned pancakes topped with bananas and their famous Royale syrup(a combinaton of syrup and cream cheese). It is like eating banana pudding. We usually split a traditional breakfast with bacon and eggs and split the pancakes too. Their staff is so friendly and the restaurant has 2 big fireplaces to warm it up in the winter. The prices are reasonable too.

The Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar is pretty new to the Gatlinburg area. We have not made it there yet because the lines are so long when we have tried to get there. If you want to try Southern food, Paula Deen's Family Kitchen is a great place to go. We usually do the family style option which includes dessert. We love the fried chicken and catfish. This restaurant is in The Island in Pigeon Forge. There is no call ahead seating so be prepared to wait. We usually put our names in as soon as we get to restaurant and walk around the shops at The Island until they text us that a table is ready. Lunch is easier to get in and a couple of dollar cheaper. Be sure to come hungry for this one. They are open until 10 pm Sunday thru Thursday and 11pm on Friday and Saturday.

We love to hike and the Smoky Mountain National Park is a great place to explore. Below are some of our favorites. Download the All Trails app for more places to hike. The trails on the app are rated for difficulty and have lots of great info. to find the best trail fit for you!
The Clingmans Dome hike is a must do hike in the Smoky Mountain National Park. It is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The trail to the top is a half mile paved surface that goes straight up hill. It can be challenging so take your time because the views are worth it. This hike is very popular so parking may be an issue. We usually take the first free space we see. Be sure to bring water. It is amazing!

Things we like to do

We definitely have not tried all the many things things there are to do in the area, but here are a few of the things we like. We will update as will continue to visit our chalet.
There are lots of great places to play mini golf in the area, but we love Davy Crocketts. The courses are challenging and the decorations on the golf course are so cute. Most of the time, someone in our party leaves with a free game by getting a hole in one on the last hole.

Mother's Day 2023 was our first visit to Dollywood. We liked it so much, we bought season passes. We were there on the opening weekend for Big Bear Mountain - Dollywood's longest rollercoaster. It was an amazing ride!! Also we had our two 9 month old grandchildren with us and there was plenty for them to do. As an added bonus, we got to see Dolly in person!! We think this is a great family outing. The park is clean and the rides felt safe. The cinnamon bread in the bakery shop is to die for! Make sure you get it before you leave.

You’ll do more than just pet the deer at the Deer Farm – you’re invited to walk among them and hand-feed these delicate animals. Your family will have a blast interacting with the critter family, including camels, zebra, goats, reindeer, Rocky Mountain Elk, emu, Fallow and Sika deer, miniature horses, Watusi, Highland cattle, donkeys, zonkies, and so much more! Our grandbabies LOVED this place. See picture above with my sweet granddaughter petting a goat. For reference, she is 15 months old.

Food City is the closest chain grocery store to the chalet. They do seem to cater to cabin/chalet rentals with lots of pre-cut food and some great local items too. It does seem a little more expensive than your average grocery store so keep that in mind.
The Dollar General is a great "close by" place to get things you may need. They do have charcoal if you plan to grill.

If you like to gamble, Harrah's Cherokee Casino is located in the middle of the town. Hiking trails, rafting, shopping and more make this a great place to visit for the day. Home of the Biltmore Estate, Asheville, NC is just over an hour and a half away from our chalet. Of course the Biltmore is the main attraction especially during Christmas, but Asheville has a great art scene, lots of unique restaurants, and some beautiful places to hike. It is definitley worth drive to spend a day.

We have not done this yet, but we really want to check it out. The Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary is just over 2 hours away from the chalet. It was established in 1896 and continued operating until 2009. The prisons’ grounds inside the venue are now part of the Barkley Marathons(check out the documentary about this). Brushy was not just in jail, but for decades, it was a coal mine for the state of Tennessee, originating in the wake of a labor battle. It is also known as being the prison which housed James Earl Ray, the assassin of Martin Luther King Jr. Tours are self-guided and former prison guards and former inmates will be nearby to answer any questions or share a brief story. You can eat at the Warden's Table restaurant(open 10:30 am-7pm Thursday-Sunday) and visit their gift shop. There is also a paranormal tour for the braver people in your group.
