Sehemu
From 2009 to 2017, bridge house Sluis Haveneiland accommodated the city’s bridge keepers. It started a new chapter in 2017 as one of SWEETS hotel’s 28 hotel rooms. As with every SWEET, Sluis Haveneiland’s interior is inspired by its architectural history.

Architect 2009: Quist Wintermans
Architect 2017: Space&Matter
Architectural Style: Contemporary
Bridge Type: Lock

Because IJburg, Amsterdam’s most recent expansion area, is built on a series of artificial islands, there is a large number of bridges here. A striking fact about this is that the bridges on IJburg were designed not by the municipal department but by independent architectural offices, including Nicholas Grimshaw, Benthem Crouwel and Meyer and Van Schooten. In addition to several bridges, the architectural firm Quist Wintermans also designed the bridge control building on Sluis Haveneiland (lock). All of the bridges and locks on IJburg were operated from the building on Bert Haanstrakade (street).

The interior contains the original control panel, from which the bridgemaster had a view of the bridges and locks via video screens. Moreover, the building was equipped with a modern public address system for communicating with land and water traffic. With such technical devices, the building was designed to represent the future of bridge control.

Ufikiaji wa mgeni
Guests have access to the entire bridge house, including a double bed (180x200cm), a toilet, a shower and coffee & tea facilities. The entrance is unlocked with the guest's own smartphone, by making use of a mobile key app and Bluetooth.

Mambo mengine ya kukumbuka
Listen to your favourite music by connecting your phone to the provided Bluetooth speaker!

A basic cleaning check is done every two days.

Please note that the bridge is still fully operational and might open and close during your stay. It is a unique experience to wave at the ships passing by, but be careful when going outside.

Because of safety regulations, the minimum age for guests to stay at SWEETS hotel is 21.

Consisting of multiple artificial islands that are connected by bridges over canals, the city’s most recent expansion area ‘IJburg’ still feels like the real Amsterdam. Presumably because of its amazing views – especially during sunrise and sunset – the neighbourhood is rapidly growing more popular and numerous trendy boutiques, classy restaurants and stylish clubs set up shop here, many of them attracting residents from all over Amsterdam. All in all there’s much to do on the island itself, but if you feel like visiting other areas in Amsterdam, tram 26 takes you directly to Amsterdam Central Station in about 30 minutes.

SWEETS hotel is a one-of-a-kind hotel located across Amsterdam in 28 different bridge houses. Each bridge house has been transformed into an independent hotel suite that accommodates a maximum of two guests. For centuries, Amsterdam’s bridge houses accommodated the city’s many bridge keepers who were responsible for opening the impressive structures for passing water traffic. With building dates between 1673 and 2009, the bridge houses carry an extensive history. Visiting them in chronological order is like a journey through time: their various architectural styles reveal how the city developed and grew, when new quarters were built and even how people thought about city development at that time. With the hotel room interiors, SWEETS hotel offers guests a unique and comfortable living space, while keeping the history of every bridge house in mind. All bridge houses are different, and so are the interiors. Every SWEET accommodates up to two adults and contains a kingsize double bed, a bathroom and coffee and tea facilities. SWEETS hotel, first initiated in 2012 as an urban space project, is 8 years in the making. Over half of the 28 bridge houses are currently available for reservations, with more coming soon. SWEETS hotel is an initiative and co-creation of the architecture office Space&Matter (known for De Ceuvel, an ecological hub), project development partner Grayfield and Suzanne Oxenaar and Otto Nan of Seven New Things, founders of Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy (the world’s first 1- to 5-star hotel) and Hotel The Exchange.
