GUIDEBOOK

DUBROVNIK OLD TOWN

Dubrovnik (distance 8 km) is one of the most prominent destinations in the Mediterranean Sea. In 1979, the Old City of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Nicknamed “The Pearl of the Adriatic”, the Old City is surrounded by medieval forts and walls which are almost 2 kilometers long and can be visited.

The prosperity of the city was historically based on maritime trade; as the capital of the maritime Republic of Dubrovnik, it achieved a high level of development, particularly during the 15th and 16th centuries, as it became notable for its wealth and skilled diplomacy.

STON AND PELJEŠAC PENINSULA

Ston (distance 60 km) is a medieval little town, once a major city of the Republic of Dubrovnik whose 14th century defensive walls were regarded as a notable feat of medieval architecture. Nowadays nicknamed “The European Great Wall of China”, this impressive structure is over 5 km long and a half can be visited. It was meant to protect the precious salt pans that contributed to Dubrovnik's wealth, which are still being worked today. The wall extends to Mali Ston, a smaller town on the northern side of Pelješac, whose Bay of Mali Ston is nowadays notable for its oysters and mussels.

The Pelješac peninsula is filled with natural beauty, historical sites, sandy and pebble beaches, great wines and outstanding seafood. Since ancient times it has been adorned with grape and olive plantations. Wine and olive oil productions have a long tradition and are among the most important commercial activities. The wine roads, visits to wineries and vineyards provide a powerful experience of local tradition, life and love of grapes and wine. A lot of families in the area have their own production, offer tastings and of course sell local products.

CAVTAT

Cavtat (distance 10 km) is an old town situated on a small peninsula, rich with Mediterranean vegetation – evergreen pines and cypresses. A special charm of this little city are the buildings remaining from the time of the old Dubrovnik Republic. A larger part of the historical and cultural monuments belong to the fine but modest Renaissance architecture with some traces of the Gothic style: the Rector's palace, fortifications, squares, churches and the Franciscan monastery.

In its several-thousand-years' long history, Cavtat used to be a flourishing Roman city called Epidaurus, and after its total destruction in the 7th century only deserted ruins remained. When the Republic bought Cavtat with the nearby region of Konavle in the 15th century it was built up again on the ruins of the old city. The cosmopolitanism and connectivity of this region with global trends at the turn of the 20th century can be felt in the Gallery Bukovac, Mausoleum of family Račić or Collection of Baltazar Bogišić, all of them located in Cavtat.

KONAVLE VALLEY

Konavle is the southernmost part of Dubrovnik area, a region with particular natural beauties and contrasts: mountain and valley, green hills and naked stone, the blue and the green, it reaches the entry into the Bay of Kotor in the East, and in the West it inclines down to the cozy coves of Cavtat. The preserved natural, unique and precious rural architecture, numerous monuments of the thousand-year-old history of this area, rich folklore, the distinctive traditional costumes and the Konavle embroidery, the harmony of man's life with nature… all this renders Konavle unique and recognizable. The best way to experience all this is to visit the Sunday morning folklore performances in Čilipi.

Different civilizations and cultures have left their mark on the region, with very rich material traces from prehistoric times to the present day (Illyrian piles, Mithraeum, tombstones...). The beautiful surroundings and the heritage of the Republic of Dubrovnik are best experienced by visiting the mills on the river Ljuta or the Sokol Grad fortress.

LOKRUM ISLAND

Lokrum is an uninhabited island and nature reserve in front of Dubrovnik Old Town. There are regular, daily ships from the nearby port of Srebreno to the island. Spending a day or just a half day there can be a really refreshing experience, as the island has plenty of pine, cypress and olive trees as well as some other subtropical vegetation which offers tranquility and shade during the hot summer days. You can take a walk through the Botanical Garden and the former Benedictine Monastery, both from the medieval times. You can also swim and sunbathe along the coast of the island, including a nudist area, play volleyball or football on small pitches on the island, as well as spend some time with your children on a playground. A couple of sandwich bars and restaurants there offer food and drinks as well as ice creams.

NATIONAL PARK MLJET

NP Mljet is situated on the island of Mljet, one of the largest islands in south Dalmatia. It includes the western part of the island, covering an area of 54 square kilometres full of lush and varied Mediterranean vegetation. The central parts of the park are: the Great Lake with the Isle of St. Mary and its 12th c. monastery (an island within an island), the Small Lake, and the villages of Goveđari, Polače and Pomena. Daily excursions start from Dubrovnik.
