Heated wood floors. High wood ceilings. Roaring surf out every window. Miles of beach out the back door and down a stairway through an enchanted forest.

CORONAVIRUS PRECAUTIONS: New House Rules prohibit anyone with any symptoms of illness (cold/flu/cough/sore throat) or possible Caronavirus exposure from checking in. The Ocean House will fully refund its charges even for last-minute cancellations due to illness/Caronavirus exposure.

Guests have the entire house to themselves - all three amazing floors - and a uniquely beautiful and peaceful 4.5-acre forest-to-dunes compound. The property is laced with delightful rainforest trails and features several stunning viewpoints, as well as a magnificent 190-step stairway leading through weather-sculpted Spruce and Alders to our private beach entrance. Only the Boathouse interior is off-limits to guests.

The Ocean House has five very clean and comfortable beds: a king, three queens, and a double. There are bathrooms on all three floors.

The top floor is one of the most romantic and relaxing rooms anywhere, showcasing the Ocean House's exceptional architecture. The 17' high timber-framed wood ceiling of Fir and reclaimed Cedar is magical in the light of six dimmable custom art glass fixtures. A classic Mission California king bed and a deluxe iron frame double bed both offer world-class ocean and forest views. Work or relax over coffee or a glass of wine at a small wooden table with two chairs overlooking the ocean and forest. The third floor has its own bathroom and shower.

The main floor has a bathroom, fully equipped kitchen, large dining table, leather couch, leather club chair, deluxe Queen size all-wood Murphy bed, Internet-enabled television, and an EXCELLENT stereo - bring your music!

Like the other two floors, the lower floor has beautiful heated Fir floors and high, timbered ceilings of Fir and Cedar. The lower floor also has two Queen-size, all-wood Murphy beds, romantic art glass lighting, wonderful forest views, a steam shower, a television, well-stocked game closet, and a washer and drier.

All five beds in the Ocean House are super-comfortable, fresh, and clean.

Twenty-three beautiful art glass fixtures, representing the ocean, fire, love, and mystery, accentuate the natural beauty of the Ocean House and its environment, all custom-designed and created for the Ocean House by Seattle glass artist James M. Curtis III.

TWO-FLOOR OPTION: Except during the months of June, July, and August, and on or around holidays, guests (groups of 4 or fewer) wanting to use only the main floor and the lower floor (3 Queen beds total), and not the third floor, may send a request for the Two-Floor Option and I will send a pricing offer that is 25% less than the then-applicable full house rate.

The kitchen includes staples like a microwave, electric teapot, toaster, coffee grinder and a French Press, as well as some nice extras like a deluxe double-sided commercial waffle iron, a panini press, large crockpot, a Nespresso espresso machine and a Nespresso milk frother. Guests also have full access to a gas BBQ on the back deck overlooking the ocean. The refrigerator is kept relatively empty for guest use.

The indoor fireplace is off-limits for safety and insurance reasons, but the outdoor fireplace in the timbered shelter is yours to enjoy for s'mores, roasting hot dogs or just sharing the incredible views and a beverage or two with friends and family. You'll find plenty of firewood in our woodsheds, and usually a fully loaded wheelbarrow ready to roll out to the shelter.

A sliding French door on the main level leads to a covered deck with beautiful ocean views framed through a Sitka Spruce forest.

The large Boathouse deck at the bottom of the beach stairs has a perfect, up-close view of the ocean and is generally warmer than the rest of the property and downright balmy on a sunny day.

Our forest stretches from the coastal highway to the sandy, grassy dunes of Moclips Beach. You can walk almost two miles in either direction from our private beach gate.

Go left to the south on the beach as far as Joe Creek and get a latte and a kite in Pacific Beach. Head north up the beach to the Moclips River and the heart of historic Moclips, where trains brought tourists for many years starting in the early 1900s.

The Shelter is a timbered structure with a stone fireplace that looks out over the ocean from a large cleared area we call the Park. The Park is great for tossing one of our many frisbees and other flying disks. We also have footballs, baseballs and gloves and even a volleyball net.

There are approximately 2,000 feet of winding, mossy rain forest trails on the property - Matthew's Trail, Stephanie's Trail, the Bluff Trail, the Park Trail, the Shelter Trail, the Shed Trail and Guido's Trail. The trails lead to three dramatic bluff viewpoints overlooking the Pacific, take you among dizzyingly tall Sitka Spruce and Cedar trees and cut through dense coastal undergrowth, primarily ferns and Salal and Huckleberry bushes. They provide endless safe exploration and adventure for kids and a surprisingly therapeutic escape for adults. Tip - make yourself a latte with the Ocean House Nespresso machine and start your morning by walking the entire trail network.

Caution - stay out of the forest in high winds, as branches may fall from very high and can cause serious injury. And please only admire - do not disturb or remove any of our cool fungi from the forest and be respectful of our wildlife.

And sorry - we do not have a hot tub and we have no plans to add one.

Ufikiaji wa mgeni
For maximum enjoyment, guests should relax by a fire in the Shelter, play some sports in the Park, explore the trails, tackle the beach stairs and walk the beach a couple miles in each direction.

Sorry, but the Boathouse itself is off limits to guests, as is the skateboard half-pipe. In Summer, if you're an expert skateboarder, we can talk about the half-pipe....

Mambo mengine ya kukumbuka
All water in the house is double filtered, crystal clear and great tasting.

We have a gas BBQ on the back deck and he kitchen includes a professional grade dual waffle iron, large crock pot, panini press, Nespresso machine and milk frother, French press, coffee bean grinder, stainless electric teapot and a toaster. There is usually a good supply of spices, cooking oils, coffee beans (in the freezer) and other assorted food and beverage products available for guest use. We always provide a complementary bottle of wine, complementary chocolates and a sleeve of 10 Nespresso espresso pods.

The waters of the Washington coast can be dangerous and extra caution is warranted during the winter months, when the surf and currents are most unpredictable. Children must be closely watched on the beach and neither adults nor children should enter the water alone.

The house stereo is excellent and will connect to any device that takes a mini-jack.

Except in winter, the outside water faucet closest to the front door runs nice warm water so you can clean sandy clothes or sandy kids before they come in. But dry those feet - the wood floors are very slippery under wet feet.

Writer's Special: Between the months of September and May, any writer may rent the Ocean House by himself or herself on a monthly basis at the monthly discount and have full access to the Boathouse. The Boathouse is an exceptionally inspiring space for any kind of writing. Message for more information.

Check out our Airbnb Guidebook for everything to do in the area - restaurants, bars, beaches, national park highlights, family activities, cultural attractions, and shopping options.

A binder of guest info at the house has phone numbers, menus and other info for most of the following places so you can call in orders or reservations or check hours and availability. The binder also includes maps of hiking trails and other local sights and features.

THE OCEAN CREST. Just four driveways to the north of the Ocean House is the best and fanciest restaurant on the entire Washington Coast - the Ocean Crest Resort and Restaurant. Highly recommend, especially for date night or any special event - or even just some drinks and appetizers in the bar.

SEABROOK. And just about a mile directly to the south of the Ocean House on Hwy 109 is the awesome new town called Seabrook, which has a great restaurant called the Mill 109, as well outstanding pizza at Frontager's Pizza, a fun wine and cheese bar, and the best little grocery store in the neighborhood, among many other amenities. Great for bike riding, skateboarding, shooting hoops, hiking and exploring. You can rent bikes at Buck's bikes and he'll show you the riding and hiking trails he's building.

PACIFIC BEACH. The little town of Pacific Beach is about a mile away. Head right out of the driveway and take a right at the four way stop. We love Emily's Bakery, the Hi-Flyers Kite Shop (great lattes at great prices), the Surf's Up Coffee Shop (great lattes, waffles, ice cream, pastries, clam chowder...), the Wacky Warehouse and the two convenience stores. If you want to enjoy Emily's incredible baked goods - get there early! Jim sells out of many of his best items quickly.

GROCERIES - bring what you can, especially fresh vegetables and meats. We have two stores in Pacific Beach and Seabrook has a nice little store, but if you're cooking in, get your groceries in the big city first.... Ocean Shores has a bigger and slightly better grocer store if you're in a pinch for something. That's about a 25 minute drive to the south. On your way in, assuming you take Ocean Beach Road, at Copalis Crossing you'll see Voss Acres Produce Market - an excellent stop for fresh fruits and vegetables and other miscellaneous grocery items.

LAKE QUINAULT. The Western Approach to the Olympic National Forest is just 35 minutes away via the incredibly scenic Moclips Highway. Enjoy a great meal at the Lake Quinault Lodge and enjoy any number of wonderful old growth hiking trails just across the street from the lodge. To get there, go left out of the driveway for several miles through the town of Moclips. Take a right at the Moclips Highway. In about 23 miles go left on Hwy 101 for about 6 miles and take a right into the Olympic National Park - it's that easy!

KALALOCH LODGE. Head north of the Lake Quinault area on Hyw 109 for a fantastic visit to Beaches 1 - 4 and a so-so lunch at the Kalaloch Lodge.

OCEAN SHORES. There's lots of family fun in Ocean Shores, just 20 minutes south - go carts, putt-putt golf, a movie theater and some great bars and restaurants. The Galway Bay Irish Bar is always a fun stop (and kid friendly) and Mike's Seafood is pretty awesome. I'm also partial to the Elk Head Tap Room in Ocean Shores.

THE SEAGATE. Looking for some good bar food, a late night drink and some pool super close? The Seagate Bar and Restaurant just across the highway and a few hundred feet to the south is where you'll find some friendly locals to enjoy a drink or two with. The food there is also pretty good, especially breakfast Sat and Sun morning when my friend Rudy is cooking. While I walk the short distance there myself at night, it's a dark and somewhat dangerous stretch of highway, best to drive - or bring flashlights and be very, very careful to avoid being hit.

FISHING. If you'd like to drop some cash on excellent guided fishing on the Quinault River, let me know and I'll check with my tribal fishing guide Richard Obi. That's just about a half hour from the Ocean House via the Moclips Highway.

CHEAP BURGERS, DOGS, PIZZA AND FISH AND CHIPS. The best cheap eats in Moclips may well be the burgers, fries, onion rings and other fast food items at the Moclips Grocery. They also make fantastic pizzas that you bake yourself. Go left out of the driveway and the Moclips Grocery is just about 1.5 miles down on the left.

TERIYAKI - Another ok cheap option is the Teriyaki kitchen at the You and I Market in Pacific Beach, a mile to the south.

BOWLING. And here's the final big secret - on Friday and Saturday nights, there's an awesome mini bowling alley called Dewdrop Lanes that opens up at the Pacific Beach Conference Center and Resort, known locally as the Navy Base. To get there just take a right outside the driveway, go a few hundred feet and take a right where a sign says Beach Access and then a quick left onto the road that parallels Hwy 109. The Navy Base is on the right. Go in the front entry and ask about bowling. You'll love it!

Wakati wa ukaaji wako
I may or may not be in the Moclips area during your stay. There's a slight chance I'll be camping down in the Boathouse and working on the property, but I'm available by phone 24x7 for assistance and recommendations unless I'm camping in the remote wilderness, in which case I'll do my best to ensure that prompt local help is available from the housekeeper and/or trusted nearby friends and neighbors. The day before you arrive I will message you easy "check-in" instructions. They day before you depart I will message you easy "check-out" instructions.

You may notice that the Ocean House compound is guarded by numerous exterior security cameras. There are NONE in the house. We rarely, if ever, review any of the footage - only if there appears to have been some kind of incident, like an animal knocking over a trail light, as sometimes happens. The cameras primarily serve as a security deterrent and provide peace of mind in this somewhat remote location on the edge of the continent.
