Food Scene

It's our favorite because we own the place and we love great coffee! You'll like the vintage ambiance , quiet seating area and menu including Latte' , Frappe' & Iced drinks - with and without coffee. Kid's love milk steamers and hot chocolates. Jan's home brewed Chai is delightful. Sarah is the "Muffin Master" and we have to keep Steve away from the huge cinnamon rolls which taste as good as they smell.

We love the atmosphere, the German lunch fare and the dessert menu is to die for! The staff of the Harney Peak Hotel, now the home of the Alpine Inn, has sought to accommodate its guests for more than a century. Built in 1886, this historic landmark, with its reputation for fine dining, became the showplace of Hill City. Family owned & operated for over 3 decades, the Alpine Inn carries on this tradition. The Alpine Inn has been noted in several national & international publications for its friendly, homey atmosphere steeped in mellow old world charm and its delicious meals. The luncheon menu boasts both ethnic European and contemporary dishes. The famous streamlined evening menu features filet mignon and homemade desserts that are just as aesthetically pleasing to the eye as the palate! On the corner of Elm & Main Street in the heart of the Black Hills Stands this majestic portal to the past. We strive to make your visit to our corner of the world a pleasant memory. It is our hope that you experience all of the warmth & charm that emanates from this cherished landmark in Hill City, SD. If walls could talk, ours would tell you stories that even Hollywood could not match. Isn’t it about time that you’ve come and added your story to these walls?

Love the atmosphere, service and Ma's cheesecakes! Desperados is well-loved by locals and tourists alike and has been around for several years. The building was originally the Von Woehrman Building and was built over a century ago in 1885. Camillo Von Woehrman set the log walls for a saloon and sleeping quarters (now the dining room). This met the needs of the increasing flow of prospectors, investors, and ne’er-do-wells. Then in 1890 after South Dakota’s statehood, Camillo closed his tavern and opened the Harney Peak Mining News, which with the help of Carrie Ingalls/Swanzey (yes, think Little House on the Prairie) he operated till 1910. Desperados has survived many disasters! Most notable: a fire in 1891; the fire of 1910 which destroyed major portions of Hill City; and, the flood of 2015. In 1977 Desperados was added to the National Registry, listed as the oldest hand-hewn building in continuous use in South Dakota. Over the years the building has housed Dance halls, an Auto Garage, and Retail Shops. Desperados in 2016 was purchased from Dan Dickey (founder of the Restaurant Desperados) by the present owner Joshua Ripley. With the help of friends and family, Josh has kept this Hill City gem true to the Midwest by “sourcing buffalo that can be seen in our prairies, fresh produce grown in our fields, and trout and walleye that can be found in our rivers and lakes.” Josh is also an avid collector. His carefully curated western art, antiques, and historical firearms adorn the Desperados walls for his guests to enjoy. “They help tell the rich history of our beautiful Black Hills.”
