Natalie works from home and will be the host to greet you on arrival. This is typically our only face-to-face interaction and then you'll be given space to live independently (unless you'd like to chat, of course!). You'll also self-check out at the end of your stay, so no worries about waiting to drop back a key.

Portobello is on Dublin City's South side and known as the safer and more cultural side of the city. It's a vibrant, friendly and hipster area, most famous for its burgeoning street art, food scene and nightlife. You'll find all the offbeat, niche business here. Dozens of in vogue restaurants, tiny independent bookstores, thriving bodegas, coffee houses, wacky antiques and bohemian design shops. There's a big community buzz and streets will often have block parties in the summer. The residents are tight knit and open to making friends with visitors. You may be even be lucky to run into famous doggies like Bertie from the Bookshop and Ted, the paddle-boarding sheepdog!

‍ ◈ PORTOBELLO HABITAT ◈
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
Portobello has the luxury of being both close to nature and city life. In just a few steps, you'll find outdoor yoga classes, friends having Al fresco beers after work, skaters, musicians playing music, landscape painters with easels, kayakers... A cornucopia of birds such as swans, pigeons, seagulls, herons, ducks, blackbirds... Canal life continues in the form of barges, locks, willow trees, grassy pathways... Then come nighttime, you'll be in total peace and quiet. Our apartment complex is made up of working professionals who like to take it easy in the evenings. To be only a 15-20 min walk from Temple Bar yet not surrounded by noise or foot traffic... The luxury of that never ceases to amaze!
‍ ‍ ‍ ‍

◈ PORTOBELLO HISTORY ◈
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
Portobello is an authentic and historic part of Dublin and was once known as "Little Jerusalem" due to the influx of Jewish refugees during the 19th century. We have a Jewish museum on Walworth Road, which runs parallel to our street and commemorates this era. Our local Bretzel bakery are still baking traditional Jewish Challah bread, having remained kosher certified since their opening in 1870. Just up the way, is also a superb restaurant called Locks. It used to be a sweet shop during Ireland's revolutionary times and it's basement window provided a great vantage point for spying at British Army barracks on the other side of the canal.
‍ ‍

◈ PORTOBELLO ICONS ◈
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
Literature fanatics will be pleased to stay across the road from the birthplace of celebrated playwright, George Bernard Shaw (the man behind Broadway's 'My Fair Lady', 'Waiting for Godot'... and more). If you go the next street over, you'll see the house where Leopold Bloom lived in James Joyce's 'Ulysses' - a world renowned novel which has the longest sentence ever written at 4,391 words! On our doorstep is also the art studio of one of Ireland's most foremost painters, the late Louis Le Brocquy. You can find some of his work in the National Gallery of Ireland today.

Mambo mengine ya kukumbuka
‍ ‍ ‍
◈ WE HAVE A CAT ◈
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
► We have a little, grey cat called Seven. She's shy of new humans, so she will make sure to steer clear! She poses no threat and is definitely not one for roaming into unknown spaces like the Airbnb room.

▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
► Please give us an estimated time of arrival between the check-in slot of 2-11pm (90% of the time we will be at home waiting for you). We are usually tucked up in bed with the front door locked by 11pm - so make sure to communicate delays, where possible. Thank you in advance!

◈ LOCALS ◈
▔▔▔▔▔▔
Portobello is a cultural hotspot for young, creative professionals. Some of our most treasured celebrities frequent watering holes such as The Bleeding Horse (second oldest pub in Ireland) and other institutions like Anseo, Devitt's or Ryan's.

◈ FOOD ◈
▔▔▔▔▔
The 1.5 km strip is bustling with hundreds of independent restaurants, bars and coffee shops. There's an abundance of flavours to try, like wood fired pizza from a street hatch [Dublin Pizza Co.], Moroccan brunch [Brother Hubbard], a vegan butcher [Sova], a rooftop bar [Sophies], Pan-Asian in a Tokyo subway [Hang Dai], Specialty Coffee roasters [Reference Coffee] or a bookshop cafe with Bertie the dog [The Cake Cafe]... Your options are endless!

◈ NIGHTLIFE ◈
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
A meagre 6 min walk and you're at Harcourt Street, which is Dublin's main clubbing district. Try Dicey's on for size and stargaze atop its mezzanine with a €2 beer. Explore rooms of chart music next door at Coppers; a place where our citizens come to (as we say in the Irish vernacular)... "Shift the face off each other". You can stumble across the road and do much the same at Dtwo and Everleigh.

◈ IRISH CULTURE ◈
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
If you'd rather shy away from nightclubs, pop on your Paddy cap and take a slice of out of 'Wexford Street', which is only a 7 min stroll. Give the bodhrán a whirl at a Whelan's Trad session. Sip on a poitín cocktail inside the Tokyo inspired, Opium lounge. Use the luck of the Irish and roll your dice at one of three nearby casinos. It's also a rite of passage to annihilate a kebab from Zaytoon at the end of the night.

◈ AMENITIES ◈
▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
Portobello has a 24 hour Flyfit gym, Spin City laundrette, SCR dentist, Brady's GP and pharmacy, Portobello physio, Rathmines chiropractor, budget supermarkets like Tesco Express and health food stores like Listons and Nourish. Not to mention venturing down each little nook and cranny. A Portobello veteran could walk the same route everyday and still stumble upon new art murals, jewellers [Dijin, Greenes] and wacky design shops [Christy Bird, Decor].

I'm a freelance Music Journalist originally from a little village in the South East of Ireland. Before venturing into the media, I spent my early twenties working in Hospitality for various hotels, and also in Catering for the Guinness Storehouse and National Gallery of Ireland. If there's anything I've learned from Airbnb hosting, it's that people are mostly good and that ironing is the bane of my life.
