You can enjoy the rainforest view from your four poster bed, watch toucans from your private plunge pool, dine by candlelight in your tropical garden or at one of the fine restaurants minutes away, explore palm fringed beaches alive with pelicans and tropical fish...

Owners Tine & René live on site, so whatever information or practical assistance needed, we are here to help you organise that activity or tour, car, golf cart or bike rental or perhaps just to tell you about the best snorkelling spots or the most romantic beach. Geckoes Lodge is small enough to offer you personal service when you need it and to respect your privacy.
We have a dog - Cali is big, but very friendly and will want to say hi. He doesn't get into your house or pool though :-)

Guests at Geckoes Lodge have access to the entire property: the extensive gardens and a mini rainforest wood with paths leading to the river at the back of the property.

Mambo mengine ya kukumbuka
Things to Do...
If you need a break from lying in your pool, watching the birds and butterflies or enjoying the beaches, there are plenty of other things to see and do in and around Puerto Viejo … Here are just a few of them!

Jaguar Rescue Centre:
Visit the injured or orphaned ‘stars of the rainforest’ and learn about their rehabilitation. Tours at 9.30 & 11.30 daily except Sunday. Private tours available on request.

Botanical Garden:
Take a guided walk around this stunning rainforest garden, taste local fruits straight from the trees and photograph tiny Red Poison Dart frogs.

Fishing / Snorkelling/ Dolphin Watching:
Check out Wahoo fishing and tours: a great half or full day out on the water.

Turtle watching:
In season be part of a small group guided by local experts to witness the moving spectacle of turtles returning to their birthplace to lay their eggs. Contact Junior (in your house folder for detailed information).

Horseback riding:
With options for adults and children at all experience levels, take an adventure and spot wildlife from the saddle. Contact Caribe Horse Riding Club (Emily) for more information.

Canopy Zip-line Tours:
Take a swing through the canopy and see nature up close with the thrill of a fairground ride! Contact Terraventuras for more info.

Chocolate Tour:
Learn the history of cacao and taste organic chocolate - a must for chocoholics! There are 2 great tours given by Chocorart and Caribeans: See their flyers for more info.

Surfing Lessons:
Learn how to surf or improve your technique at Cocles beach, home of the famous Beach Break. Go to Om Yoga, near Cocles beach and ask for Alex: he guarantees that you'll stand on your board in 1 hour!

Scuba diving / Snorkelling:
Take a snorkelling trip to the outer reefs and become part of the underwater world or learn how to dive in warm, clear waters and get your PADI certification. Reef Runners in Puerto Viejo will tell you all about it!

Spa Time:
Indulge yourself and choose from a menu of treats all featuring local fruits and oils. Pure Spa and Indulgence Spa use local fruits and chocolate and the smells are divine!

Green Iguanas:
Visit and learn about these magnificent prehistoric reptiles at The Green Iguana rescue centre in Punta Uva.

Rainforest Waterfall: Take a picnic and the road to Bribri and immerse yourself in the cool, clear water of a rainforest waterfall. Just ask us for directions.

Gandoca Lagoon: This is one of our favourites, perhaps because few people know about it...so it's usually just you and the lagoon and any wildlife that happens to be around. Like a miniature Tortuguero, this small lagoon is a relaxing boat trip, spotting monkeys or basilisk lizards and bird life.

Talamancan Mountains and Indigenous tribes: If you're interested in the indigenous culture of this area, take a look at ATEC's trips to visit an indigenous tribe and/or talk to Junior about visiting a local indigenous family.

And this is just a few of the activities on offer in and round Puerto Viejo ... there are many more!

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Limon, Kostarika

Geckoes Lodge is situated on Margarita Road in Cocles, 3 kilometres south of the village of Puerto Viejo and 1 kilometre inland.

Puerto Viejo stretches along the the south Caribbean coast of Costa Rica and encompasses the neighbourhoods of Cocles, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva and Manzanillo, where the road ends.
With exceptionally beautiful beaches, each with their own character and vast tracts of rainforest teeming with wildlife, this area is naturally stunning and often called 'one of the last paradises'.
The small settlement of Cocles has numerous restaurants and supermarkets and easy access to the beach. Quiet and relaxed Cocles is home to both locals and foreigners and arguably the best restaurant on this coast!

Although each neighbourhood has its own character, the entire area has a distinct Caribbean atmosphere due to the historical influx of Jamaican settlers. This is illustrated in the prevalence of Caribbean cuisine, reggae music, Rasta and Patois being spoken alongside English and Spanish.

However, this 'Garden of Eden' has attracted people from all over the world resulting in an international mix of more than 40 cultures reflected in the variety of restaurants!

Far less developed than the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, the Caribbean coast is verdant and lush with great tracts of pristine rainforest bordering the spectacular beaches.

The pace of life is 'tranquilo' and being surrounded by such tropical beauty lends itself to relaxation and embracing the good life: 'Pura Vida'.
