Quiet. Wooded. Retreat. This - and the separate Guest House - is all yours to enjoy. The private entrance leads up a flight of stairs. Continental breakfast is provided for you in the guest quarters.
Our family home for 3 generations, many live oak and pecan trees are from the original antebellum home site era. Notched timbers from that original 1857 home are now part of the lavender barn structure. The present main home was built by our grandfather May, a lumber businessman, in 1941.

Sehemu
THE SPACE: This space is designed for someone seeking the perfect rural retreat. The design is bright, allowing natural light through numerous windows. A kitchenette/living room is adjoined by a separate bedroom and bathroom.

KITCHEN: The kitchen is fully equipped with stove, oven, mini refrigerator, coffee maker, teapot, and dishes in the event you choose to eat in.

BEDROOM: The spacious bedroom contains a king size bed with down comforters. Large windows provide plenty of natural light, while wooden windows can be shut for needed rest. Double closets provide plenty of room for storing personal effects. A cot is available for an additional guest.

BATHROOM: The bathroom is decorated with an art deco chandelier and mirror, and fresh towels are provided daily. From the full bath one looks east over the lawn, flower gardens, and pastures.

LIVING ROOM: Fully furnished lounging space with vintage sofa, coffee table, and chairs. A collection of travel and art books in the built-ins provide ample material for leisure reading. The living space opens up to a balcony through French doors, giving access the outdoors. Chairs and breakfast table, allow for a meal or coffee while taking in the views of gardens, pastures, the lavender colored barn, and the forests beyond.

GROUNDS: Large pecan trees, live oaks, and magnolia trees fill the lawns around the house. Vernacular and a formal gardens full of azaleas, gardenias, and cannas provide a haven for hummingbirds. After settling in, guests at Blueshadows usually first relax on the lawn in chairs under the pecan trees, and follow with a walk or run through wilder parts.

Be sure to make time to walk “Grandfathers Nature Trail” on our property. It’s a 1.5 mile trail that starts just outside our fenced yard, headed south. It’s an 8-10 minute walk to the boat house on the 10-acre pond. The trails follows the perimeter of the pond, surrounded by old-growth hardwood timber. Reviewers often say the nature trail was a high point of their experience. Our dog, Bobby, will be your trail guide.

More on the Nature Trail. The trail is marked with signs and a series of foot bridges over the creeks. (If unsure which way the trail goes, stay to the edge of the pond - the trail always returns to the edge of the water). There’s a series of beaver dams that can be seen, and evidence of beavers presence can be seen all along the trail. Quiet walkers with careful eyes often see wood ducks, deer, turkey, and beavers (swimming in the late evening), and on rare occasions, raccoon, fox and bobcat.

Excursions into the natural beauty of pine and hardwood forests are followed by an easy return to the graceful comfort of the guest house. Through the years we have enjoyed seeing these peaceful settings offer our guests respite from the noise of urban life, allowing the quiet charm of the rural South to be heard.

LAKE & FISHING: Wood-ducks, herons, and beaver make their homes on a 10 acre lake, an 8-minute walk from the guest house. Bass and brim are caught from two docks, and from the banks, which is reached by a system of nature trails winding along the shore. Guests use their own fishing equipment, and are requested to catch and release bass under 6 pounds. Bass over 6 pounds can be caught as well. Photos are suggested of such catches to support the general integrity of anglers :)

Paris. Sydney. Greensboro. My husband Thad was an airline captain with TWA and we enjoyed traveling around the world together. The joy of making new friends during our many visits to small inns around Europe, Australia, and New Zealand inspired us to open our own bed and breakfast here in 1988. Now the world comes to us! We’ve had wonderful artists, architects, writers, professors, and fellow travelers visit Blueshadows B&B, many of whom we now have the pleasure of calling friends. The town of Greensboro offers a blend of small town southern charm and new initiatives that people are writing about. This includes the Auburn Architecture Rural Studio, Project Horseshoe Farm, HERO, Sawyerville Episcopal Day Camp, Greensboro Boys and Girls Club, Organic farms, The Pie Lab, the Greensboro Opera House, Civil Rights Safe House Museum, Magnolia Grove Antebellum plantation house... and more. In 2018, our home town made news with the Oscar nominated documentary film, “Hale County this Morning, this Evening”. Be sure to check out our nature trail. Starting immediately behind our house, we maintain a well marked 1.5 mile nature trail that loops around the 10-acre pond, located in the middle of our 70-ace nature reserve and Alabama Treasure Forest. Explore Greensboro. Stay a while. At the Blueshadows B&B.
