The property is situated in the shepherds village of Vale, directly at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains. On the one hand, far away from the pulse of time, on the other hand just around the corner of Sibiu, the European Capital of Culture 2007.
The village of Vale is nestled between the wooded mountains overlooking the Transylvanian plain. No through traffic, in an absolutely peaceful spot, surrounded by a healthy mixed forest. Leaving the house behind you already find yourself on the way up to the mountain meadows with their unique flora and fauna in Europe. So take a break and treat yourself a place, where unspoiled nature meets history and traditions.

On the solid foundations of wine cellar and mezzanine floor we've set a new attic with access to a cozy roof terrace. So this cottage is also a good choice for those who are curious about how traditional architecture can be extended to modernity.

The double-door walk-in kitchen (13 sqm) is located on the mezzanine floor. It is fully equipped for self-catering with a fridge, gas stove, coffee maker and espresso machine, toaster, kettle, spices and more. The first room (17 sqm) leads off the kitchen. Three windows open the view out to the courtyard or an alley, where goats and sheep are passing by in the evening.
A staircase leads to the two light-filled rooms in the attic. The first one (13 sqm) is a connecting room and the second room (17 sqm) leads out onto the roof terrace. The view goes into the courtyard, into wooded mountains or up to the roofs of the village.
The rooms are equipped with a double bed, mirror cabinet, corner bench or armchairs, WiFi Internet access and two TVs (international channels by Astra Satellite). On arrival you will find the beds freshly made.
The bathroom (8 sqm) used to be the the summer kitchen of the farm. It is located underneath the roof terrace and is equipped with shower, bathtub and washer. Hand and bath towels, soap and shower gel are available.

The furnishing is high quality, including sanitary facilities, kitchen utensils, mattresses and bedding. All furniture, newly installed windows, doors and stairs were consistently made to measure. Each floor and the bathroom are equipped with an electrical infrared panel.
The solar-assisted central heating is backed up threefold. Either you fire up the water-bearing tiled stove in the kitchen which supplies all the radiators in the house, or an automatic control takes over the job and starts a gas heater and / or the infrared panels.
The enclosed courtyard is a leafy feast. Here you can relax on another covered patio, uncork a bottle of wine and unpack the card game. Or take place on the slope above the village, look into the vastness of the valley, and you will be surprised about the thoughts popping up in your mind out of nowhere.

On request, our cook provides breakfast or swings the wooden spoon. She conjures traditional menus fresh to the table. Also available are farm products from the village, such as fresh milk, goat or sheep’s cheese, forest honey and homemade jam, Zakusca, pickled vegetables, wine, and Schnaps.

Tip: trip to our shepherd's hut (if available) in the mountain meadows. Very basic standard, but with lots of fresh mountain air for stressed lungs. A spring emerges a stone’s throw away, the trees are full of cherries, and you can get cheese and milk from the shepherd next door. Ascent in our horse cart and, by request, traditional shepherd stew over an open fire.

The pastoral village of Vale is nestled between the mountains overlooking the Transylvanian plain. The freeway is close by, bringing all Romanian sights closer to you, but Vale is still in the middle of nowhere. A tarmac road touches on the village, but it is mostly cobblestone roads and dirt trails leading up into the wooded hills.
Thus, traditional structures and straightforward hospitality still hold up in Vale. Horses and goats are still part of the village landscape, and the farmers take up their scythes and plant corn, potatoes, and vegetables to provide for the winter.
Some say that the Romanian countryside appears frozen in time. It is unique and mostly untouched and the breath of the past touches you in every corner. Just make yourself comfortable on the hillside above the village, take a look in the vastness of the valley, and enjoy the thoughts popping into your mind out of nowhere. Maybe you'll sense the charm of the extraordinary, perceiving what life was like before it was levelled by the advance of civilization.
Until then, take a good look around. Heists and highway robberies are tales from the long-gone years of turmoil following the political change in Romania, and Count Dracula obviously exists only in movies. Most people in these parts are open-minded and very friendly when met with respect, and many of them speak English, making communication easy.
No matter which way you turn, you will experience amazing things - usually things you never expected …

I have been living in the village of Vale in Romania since 1998, commuting regularly to my second universe in Berlin. My Romanian friend and I set up a small villager-based construction company which is earning us a living in the surrounding villages.
In this period we met some people at a wine by the campfire. They were on holiday and suggested to build holiday cottages on very good terms. After a short hesitation we started to work, and they became our investors. We were lucky with them. They demanded quality - and got it - and there was never any stress over money. So we could exercise our creativities, and everybody involved received wages well above local standards. Thus emerged a battle-tried squad of regulars; boys and girls who stand together even beyond working issues.
Within 8 years we've built 2 holiday villas from scratch and revitalized the soul of 4 old farmhouses. With attention to detail all along, with respect towards the traditional style of the area, as well as with a view to modern building materials and contemporary housing needs. From the first day of rental in 2010 we welcome visitors from all over the world.
Today we manage the cottages as a team. We share receiving the guests, doing renovation jobs, gardening, or cleaning, and incidentally we take on smaller jobs in the surrounding villages. I myself maintain our website and communicate with you.
Vale is a tranquil spot to relax and hang ten; surrounded by the oldest beech forest of the continent and the unique flora and fauna of the Carpathians. On the other hand, it's a perfect base to experience Transylvania on your own.
If you don't come by car, we’ll pick you up at the Sibiu airport or station, and a rental car you can get directly with us. Also available are groceries from the local farmers and traditional menus from the most dedicated cook this side of the Carpathians. Moreover we provide an authentic outing by horse-drawn cart along an untamed stream into the mountains.

... unless you want us to tell you about the things you can do here in the mountains, in the valley or the old town of Sibiu, where to find a bathing lake, a cave or the closest fortified church in this special region, called 'Marginimea Sibiului'.
