Calci is a nice village protected from the northern winds by the Pisan Mountains and opening on the other side to the lowland and to the sea. Calci is known for its Certosa, an ancient monumental monastery belonging today to the University of Pisa, that hosts a rich natural history museum.
With a close sight on the Certosa there’s Villa Coli, a typical Tuscan villa of the first 19th century with a huge garden oriented towards the lowland with a beautiful panorama on it.

Villa Coli
Walking from the village centre towards the Certosa a point is reached where no more houses are standing along both sides of the street, the view becomes broader and a few hundred meters ahead, on the left side, the imposing complex of the Certosa stands out against the background of the Monte Pisano. Wouldn’t the eyes be irresistibly attracted by such a sight, one could notice the last building on the right side of the street: a nice nineteenth-century villa that gazes the Certosa: this is Villa Coli.
From the street you can see a low wall over which columns of a balustrade are aligned rising a little over the eye level. In the wall two gates open up and above one a great wisteria plant explodes in April with a cascade of heady smelling flowers. Beyond the wall rises the house façade, crowned by a sober squared pediment.
The garden between the street wall and the building is narrow and one could never imagine what there is at the other side of the building. Here the building opens on a wide terrace garden from which a beautiful landscape on the lowland can be enjoyed. The sight is framed on the upper side by the leafy branches of a great maritime pine tree an on the left side by the slopes of a Pisan Mountains offshoot that ends up with the hill named Verruca. On the top of such hill one can see the ruins of a middle-age castle that proves the furious fights between Florence and Pisa. On the slopes, immersed in olive tree groves, there’s the convent of Nicosia with its pointy bell tower. The centre of the sight is focused in the distance on the tower of Caprona.
On the left side the terrace garden extends under the branches of a linden that in summertime inebriates with the smell of its flowers and grants protection during the day from sun’s rays and at evening from dew fall. Here there’s a large dining table for pleasant meals in open air, which can be prepared with a barbecue that is placed nearby at guest’s disposition. On the right side of the terrace garden a pitosforo bush as big as a true tree forms a kind of “bersò” offering to adults a shady corner and to children hidden corners for their games. On the front, beyond the railing adorned with geraniums, there’s the garden: a wide meadow that declines towards the lowland, rich of flowers and fruit trees. The ground is completely fenced in so that children may enjoy such a wide space in complete safety. In winter time ripen orange fruits, at end of June apricots, in July pears and in October pomegranates.
The inside of the house is on three floors and offers rooms full with taste of the past: ceilings are decorated with original nineteenth-century paintings and the furniture is still the original one. On the ground floor there are a studio, a wide living room, the dining room and the kitchen with a neighbouring wide storage room. On the first floor there are three double bed rooms, from one of which it is entered a wide terrace. On this floor there’s also a wide bath room with painted ceilings and a panoramic window open on the garden. Between the first and the second floor there’s a supplementary bath room and on the second floor there are two additional double bed rooms the windows of which offer beautiful views of the Certosa and of the lowland.

Calci, Tuscany, Italia

The village of Calci
The village of Calci has nested in an inlet of the mountainous group named Pisan Mountains (in Italian Monte Pisano), at the bottom of a valley called Val Graziosa which in Italian means “nice valley”. The valley, that indeed does justice to its name, is oriented toward southwest and this grants Calci a particularly mild climate: sun from the morning up to the sunset and shelter from the northern winds, offered by the Pisan Mountains.
From its position, where the Val Graziosa opens to the lowland, Calci participates of two environments completely different between each other. On one side it opens to the Pian di Pisa: a fertile plain crossed by the river Arno, with a flourishing agriculture, populated by villages and towns, traversed by an excellent roads and highways network and by widespread transportation services. There are many commercial activities ranging from small shops to big hypermarkets, services of any kind, handicraft activities and small/medium size industries. On the other side there’s rising up the mountain arc of Monte Pisano, culminating in the Monte Serra (over 900mt a.s.l.), rich of silent and uncontaminated woods, secular chestnut trees, paths for long walks with splendid landscapes that extend up to the sea.
These enviable characteristics in the past led people to select Calci for residential and productive settlements that have enriched its history and of which Calci still today shows important testimonies. First of all the Certosa: an imposing former monastery in the immediate neighbourhood of the village, of great historical and artistic importance, of which will be told more diffusedly later on. The Pieve (parish) is a Romanesque church with a very characteristic façade, located in the centre of the village. The convent of Nicosia, few out of the village, at the bottom of a hill named Verruca. A little more distant, in the village of Caprona there’s the tower of Caprona, that dominates the valley from a buttress of the Pisan Mountains that almost reaches the river Arno shore.
Calci offers its inhabitants a calm country life, but every year in the first weekend of August, on the occasion of the memory of the Saint Patron Sant'Ermolao, the streets are populated with goods selling stalls and with fun park plants for the joy of the children, and everybody, including many people attracted from the villages of the neighbourhood, is having fun.
Broadening the horizon beyond the immediate Calci surroundings it is easily realized that almost all of the most interesting tourist attractions in Toscana (Pisa, Lucca, Firenze, Pistoia, Prato, Volterra, San Gimignano, San Miniato, …) can be reached in no more than one hour and in less than two hours also the remotest interesting Tuscan cities (Siena and Arezzo) can be reached. For the days in which our guests may wish to relax, several different seaside resorts can be reached on the Tirrenian Coast in a little more than half an hour.
Visitors of Calci who use an iPhone or an iBook may download from iTunes AppStore a nice comprehensive Guide of Calci and its neighbourhoods, available in Italian, English, French and German.

My name is Lavinia Coli Asquini and I’m the actual owner of Villa Coli, built in the first years of the 1800s by a great-great-grandfather of mine. The last inhabitant of Villa Coli has been my aunt Corrada, who never got married and devoted to Villa Coli all of her heart and all of her energies. Her main concern was that after her Villa Coli could be abandoned or, even worse, sold out. To ward off all of that, few days before dying the 93 aunt Corrada expressed her wish that Villa Coli would be offered to families in vacation in Tuscany. Not even 4 months later, on August 8th 2013, Villa Coli was already hosting 2 couples from Moscow with their 6 children. About myself, I got married since 1970 with Giusto Bitossi Coronedi and we live in his family house not far from Calci. We have 2 sons living in Milan and a daughter living in Paris, all married with children. Cross-stitching helps me to pass lengthy winters in the country, but as soon as the beautiful season arrives I devote me with passion to my garden and to the one of Villa Coli. Together with my husband we take care of our guests in Villa Coli and enjoy meeting different people coming from all the countries of the world.
