Wanakena, New York, Marekani

The village of Wanakena is located inside the Adirondack Park on the northwest slope of the mountains near State Route 3 about 1 1/2 hours east of Watertown NY, and 1 hour west of the Saranac Lakes. The 1 mile access road off Rt. 3 provides seclusion and separation from road noise. The village was founded as a logging center in 1902, and has maintained its turn of the century character. There is a sense of community among the seasonal and full-time residents fostered by 'Otto's Abode,' a community space in the center of the village, the rustic restaurant, post office, church, summer concert series, and other community events.

Walking access to the village center is provided by the historic footbridge a short walk from the Cottage. The village dock and beach are right across the Flow.

Four trailheads within a brief walk of the cottage provide access to the Five Ponds Wilderness, the largest contiguous wilderness area in the eastern US. A description of the Cranberry Lake Region including the Five Ponds trail system can be found on the following websites (replace * with . )

These trails provide opportunities for short hikes of a few miles, longer day hikes, and multiday hiking-camping. Many of them have destinations overlooking wild lake shoreline, and the upper Oswegatchie River.

Wanakena’s location on the western flow provides boat access to Cranberry Lake, one of the largest of the remote Adirondack lakes with its 55 miles of shoreline, about 85 percent of which is forest preserve. Along this wild shoreline is an extensive series of boat-access campsites, and trailheads leading into the wilderness.

The NYS Ranger School, located down the Wanakena Flow a mile away, has an extensive system of forest roads and trails good for walking and biking. A trailhead provides access to the Peavine Creek trail system, another opportunity for hiking and more technical mountain biking.

A short drive from Wanakena takes you to a launch point on the Oswegatchie River above the village, from where you can paddle upstream (no motor boats!) more than 15 miles as the river makes serpentine turns through marshlands and forested shoreline. Campsites provide opportunity for an overnight stay.

Town resources: The village of Star Lake 6 miles away has a convenience store with some food, a bank, a gas station, several restaurants, a pharmacy, a small but well equipped medical clinic/hospital, and a builders supply. The village of Cranberry Lake 8 miles away has gas and groceries at the general store, and a cafe for breakfast/lunch.

Elaine and David are college teachers with three grown children. We have all grown up to be swimmers, hikers, paddlers and slow food lovers, all of which we enjoy in Wanakena and throughout Adirondacks. We also love traveling out west for hiking, x-country skiing or snowshoeing, or just plain touring around. We are all campers, but now we also enjoy staying in affordable nice homes as we travel and explore the outdoors.
