Hey, y’all. We are the Ellis Family. It was me, Holly Crawford Ellis, that “encouraged” my family of 4 to take a leap of faith and purchase an almost 140 year old home 3.5 hours away from our present hometown of Huntsville, Alabama. My husband always loved Greensboro, so the sell wasn’t hard for him, but you can imagine how excited my children, Park, 18, and Lucy, 16, were to have an old vacation home in a 2 stoplight town of 2500 people. Why Greensboro? I was raised on the east end of Main Street right across the street from the iconic water tower emblazoned with a giant catfish, and even though I left over 30 years ago to attend college and raise my family, Greensboro never left me...or my heart. Whenever I am asked “Where ya from?”, I inevitably answer “Greensboro, the catfish capital of Alabama and the heart of the Black Belt” even though I have been living in Huntsville for the last 20 years! There’s just something about this place that keeps calling me home, and this time it stuck. In June of 2018, a good friend and local small business owner in Greensboro, Buzzy Barnette, called and asked for my advise on placing a mural on Main Street. You see, my first job out of college was serving as the first paid Executive Director of The Alabama Catfish Festival. One of my first projects in this role was to install a billboard on the corner of Main Street. This billboard was meant to be a semipermanent solution (only meant to last about 5-7 years) to advertise the annual festival. Some 25 years later, the old and dilapidated board was still there...but barely. It was definitely time for an upgrade, especially considering the once highly attended festival experience was no longer an annual event. Fortunately, through my years of community service throughout the state, I had connected with an amazingly talented muralist in North Alabama, Donald Walker. Donald and I collaborated with the Greensboro Area Business and Tourism Association (GABTA) to create a design worthy of the iconic Catfish Festival wall on the corner of Highway 69 South and Main Street. This mural project ALSO set the wheels in motion for me to finally follow my dream and start my own t-shirt company, and Black Belt & Main was born (go to b (Website hidden by Airbnb) for more information). The mural project moved quickly, but over the month of sleeping in friends guest rooms and reliving old friendships, it became very clear I was being called home. I was truly homesick and wanted to be a part of my hometown again . By the end of the summer, my husband, Jeff, and I had purchased one of my favorite homes on Main Street from a good friend and the journey has led to sharing my amazing hometown via AIRBNB. Of coarse, that was an interesting conversation when we told my parents, who had sold our family home 6 years prior to join us in Huntsville (another amazing town). I think they are still shaking their heads, but they truly are our biggest supporters in this leap of faith as this has been home to the Crawford Clan for over 6 generations. Did I mention this house is old? Built in 1880 (we just discovered last week it is 9 years older than we originally thought!), it’s a continuous work in progress, but very comfortable and ready to share so others can find out why the Black Belt is such a great place to call home. Jeff and I have always been creative and “handy”, but this project has forced us to roll up our sleeves and learn new skills, especially Jeff! I could write another 2 pages about our adventures in restoration! We hope to share some of these hilarious stories with you during your visit. Chip and Johanna make it look too easy!! So, this is our story. We look forward to meeting you and making you a part of our story as well. If you don’t know this already, ALL ROADS LEAD TO THE BLACK BELT, and we are glad it led you to 1704 Main Street!
