Welcome to my page....thanks for visiting. My house is in a quiet, completely authentic fishing community in Currimao, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. Clean, modern, fully appointed and ready for your dream vacation. Read below for all the details, including the option to rent my 2008 Nissan 4 door 4x4. The home has two separate bedrooms and baths, and the sofa is large enough to sleep on. Very clean, all new, complete and self contained, suitable for long stays. Thanks!

Sehemu
Perfect as a family vacation home, for 2 couples, or for international company employee travel, this 2 bedroom and 2 bathroom home is ultra clean, spacious and modern. There is a large living/dining/kitchen area that has big windows on the sea and 4 sliding glass doors. Its all glass and unobstructed views of the South China Sea from almost every point in the home. There is a spacious front patio/porch with large, comfortable chairs. The car parking is directly in front, on the property and there is a small two lane road in front and then a seawall. The house has tile floors throughout, as do the bathrooms. The two bathrooms have hot water showers, no tub. The new ductless inverter mini-split air conditioner in the living room is silent, efficient and large enough to cool the whole house, but if the bedroom doors are closed guests use the room air conditioners in each bedroom. There is never any need for heat, even on the coldest winter night.
There is a dinner table with chairs, and extra chairs for 6. The sofa is huge and can be a bed. The TV has about 100 channels, mostly blah blah but there is a lot of US programming, CNN and Fox News if you care, HBO, Cinemax, and a few other movie channels. Australian, Philippine and other Asian programs as well. Mostly the TV is English language.
The kitchen is modern and has all the necessary cooking tools, pots, pans, etc. The fridge is big and new, with a giant bottom freezer.
There is a carport that a smaller car can fit in, but my Nissan does not fit. Its easiest to just park out front. There is basically zero risk of car or house break ins. The neighbors are awesome, and the neighborhood is completely calm with zero crime. The house has a beautiful view of the South China Sea, and a postcard perfect sunset 365 days per year.

Ufikiaji wa mgeni
Guests have access to the entire property except there is an owner closet that's locked, and one of the kitchen cabinets is locked.

Mambo mengine ya kukumbuka
Crystal clear water and beautiful reefs for diving are right out front along with beautiful sunsets 365 days per year. Surfing, kite surfing, diving, strolling on endless unspoiled beaches, and exploring tropical orchid-covered mountains lie minutes away in every direction. Within walking distance (3 minutes) there is a local Sari Sari grocery store with everything you'll need in a pinch. A 10 minute drive away is the Paoay local market on Tuesday and Saturday. The Batac local market is 20 minutes drive, and open on all days. Laoag, the provincial capital is about 30 minutes drive, and there you'll find all kinds of shopping and supermarkets as well as the airport for flights to Manila. The neighbors are AWESOME and friendly. Very curious, and COMPLETELY harmless! There are hard working fishermen and divers in the water out front all the time. If you surf, there is a nearby good B+ break at Pangil reef, and as well, Culili Point, and many beach breaks between the two. There will NEVER be another surfer (except for me) anywhere near the house. A 1 hour drive to the south is Sabang in Cabugao, an A wave that's best in the winter. There is a local crew but its not hard to get a wave. Then 3 hours more to the south is San Juan, a surf town that is packed and full of tourists and surf schools. Best in the winter but it breaks in the summer as well. You can get great food, clean hotel rooms and its interesting to see. On the way is Vigan, provincial capital of Ilocos Sur. A nice colonial city with old streets, colonial buildings, history, restaurants and hotels. Two hours' drive to the north is an A+ break called 'Blue Lagoon' or locally named Kapuluan, and its really good with 3 different breaks but only on NE swell from typhoons in the rainy/summer season. It does not get crowded but there are surfers there. For kite surfing, its good July/August and a bit before and after, and then again November through March although December through February is best. Many reef breaks for wave kiting, sand beach breaks, sand points. Downwinders go forever, with the possibility of starting in front of my house and then kiting 60 km to the north if you've got the legs. Best in the summer 'Habagat' winds from the south. Getting home from a long downwinder is interesting, but you can hire a trike, take the local bus, jeepney or a combination of all three. As they say, its all about the journey. There are 5 winter kiters within 50 miles, only 1 summer kiter. If you have a mountain bike, there are good mountain trails near my house but not like Colorado or places like that. Its hard to find the trails, but they are out there! Lots of hard pack as well, all through the hills behind the house. I ride all the time, no cars or trucks to worry about if you stay on the hard pack and explore the area. Just stay off the highways!

If you like rain forrests and orchids, there is a mountain range nearby that you can hike and do exploring. Mt Sicapo is the highest peak, just about 5,000 feet. Its pretty awesome to go, and if you research online you can read up about over night camping trips. Or go to the eco preserve at the base of the mountains in the town of Nueva Era, a 45 minute drive from my house. Its really nice. You will want to do that hike and explore the mountains in the winter/dry season. Nearly impossible in the wet season. I bike to the top of the Abra road pass from Nueva Era. Its a 5,000 foot climb in about 8 miles of riding. It gets pretty steep, and cool at the top. No cars, no people. Good road. Just rain forrest turning to alpine pines. Beautiful views, a great experience. You can also do the ride on the Aoayo road pass from Solsona, its also called Solsona road. You go over the pass from Ilocos Norte, and then continue on to Claveria in Cagayan Province. Its a 2-3 day ride, and you'll want to find other riders to accompany you. I've never done it but if you're fit and into it, go. You'll stay in Claveria in a 'homestay' room, and ride back to Laoag in one day from Claveria. Further into the mountains in Mountain Province and an 8 hour dirve there is Sagada, a fantastic must see. Local people are really friendly, the food is unique, its cool and green, and they grow red and black rice and coffee. Local textiles, music and customs, they are a different people with their own language. Heading up to the north, you can visit Pagudpud, a great little vacation spot. White sand beaches, crystal clear water, and one of the best restaurants in northern Luzon, Berg-Blick, owned and operated by a German chef. Great food. Go to Ayoyo beach, stop at Kingfisher resort for good food and a beautiful beach, and then continue on to Blue Lagoon for a nice stay. At Blue Lagoon, keep going past the crazy resort, and you'll wind up at North Coast Board Riders inn. Colin and his wife will take good care of you, just don't say you know me haha. Its a 2 hour drive from my house. In Pagudpud you can visit Adams, a mountain area that's beautiful. Orchid covered green mountains, just get out of the car and walk and see. No one around, no danger. Just explore. Anyone you meet will happily help you with directions. Just make sure they understand where you want to go and that you understand where they tell you to go!

Closer to home there is Paoay and its colonial church, Culili point and 4x4 rides, the rock formation and coral reefs at Pangil. Lots to do and see. Or just stay home and watch life in the hood. Do a big BBQ, you will not be disappointed.

Mahali

Currimao, Ilocos Region, Ufilipino

The neighborhood is really chilled out, just a fishing village and local people. Its really just that, you will not likely see any foreigners. In a 5 minute drive south you'll find the Sea Horse hotel, with breakfast entrees, then Playa Tropical resort with a full kitchen and good food that's open for food until about 9pm. Then Jade Karla, a roadside restaurant with a full menu and some good entrees, but they close about 7pm. They are all clean and ok to enjoy and if you ask what's fresh, they may have some really good fish. In Paoay, a little colonial city about 15 minutes' drive there is a really good new restaurant called Smoke. Its a bbq restaurant, but they have a lot of REALLY good entrees, including bbq lamb, pork and some local dishes that are great. If you're feeling spry, there is also in Paoay a restaurant called Spam....yes, Spam. Spam and eggs, Spam and ham, Spam and Spam. Or just plain Spam. Your wave, dude.
On the way to Laoag via Paoay, there is a really good restaurant called Vista Lago, on Paoay lake. Its very good and the chef has some unique fusion dishes. There are new restaurants going up all the time, but you'll just have to stop in and try. All the local kitchens are clean and you're safe to eat anywhere. You can always get a roasted chicken on the way, road side places like Andoks, Chooks To Go, etc are everywhere. $4 and you'll get a fresh, good quality, whole roasted chicken that will be cooked just right. Not a bad fix, just bring it home and add some rice and veggies, all good! Breakfast is usually pretty low on calories so I often order extra eggs and rice.

In Laoag, there are some restaurants, like Presciosa, with great native Ilocano foods and desserts, and Gerry's place with his big buffet. I find its best to buy the excellent chicken, pork and fish available in the markets, along with fresh fruits and veggies and cook at home. Its easy, cheap and good. In Laoag there is Save More, Pure Gold and Robinsons supermarkets and there you'll find some good food stock and staples like real cereal, cheese and more diverse fruits and veggies, more than you'll find in Batac, Paoay or certainly Currimao. But in Currimao you can get eggs, milk and rice, staples. Its ok to buy fish and veggies from the sellers who stop by the house every day. For pork go to Monterey in Batac or Laoag, and for chicken go to the local markets! In the winter, the fishermen bring Yellowfin tuna, Mahi and Wahoo right to the front of the house. My next door neighbor Nixon is a fisherman, and he'll hook you up! Just let him know what you want.

There is no wifi at my house. All the local hotels in Laoag, and the Playa Tropical resort near the house have good wifi. I use a mobile broadband device called a pocket wifi from Globe. You can buy one for $20 in Laoag, and its $20 per month thereafter. I rely mainly on my USA T-mobile phone with unlimited local data. It works ok, but its 3-g. The pocket wifi is 4-g and works a lot better, but limited to about 5gig of downloads/24 hrs. It resets daily. Internet connectivity can be inconsistent, but in the house it works well, and in the cities it works great. Best bet, bring a phone from home with a great international roaming plan.

The house is available for rentals when I am not in the Philippines. The local manager couple is an American man and woman from the Philippines. He is very experienced, knows the house, is very familiar with the area after living there for over 20 years, and he lives 20 minutes away. They can advise and assist with everything you'll need and they will meet and greet you on arrival either at the house or your nearby point of arrival. He will assist with getting you the car if you choose to rent it from me during your house rental.
