Mahali utakapokuwa

Naalehu, Hawaii, Marekani

Hale Malulani is centrally located between Kona and Hilo making it the perfect place to explore the whole island. It is the southern most town in the US and is home to some of the islands most desired destinations such as Green Sands Beach, a bay that has been cut by the ocean into the side of Pu’u Mahana, a cinder cone that erupted about 50,000 years ago. The green sand is created by a deposit in the lava called olivine, which stays deposited on the beach because it is heavier than the other, lighter components of the lava. It is possible to drive a 4x4 to Green Sands, there are also free-lance tour guides that will drive you there for a fee, or the hike is approximately 1 1/4 miles each way.

Punalu'u Black Sand Beach is another famous local favorite... Relax under a coconut palm on this beautiful black sand beach where Hawksbill turtles abound in great numbers, and enjoy the crisp cool water. If you’re interested in Hawaiian culture then here is a good place to jump on the Kings Trail. The Kings Trail was made by the ancient Hawaiians for the convenience of the king to walk around the island barefoot. Only the king was allowed to walk on the trail… The kings’ servants brought large round flat lava rocks from the shore and placed them in a line all the way around the island for the king to walk upon. Along the trail you will encounter petroglyphs, burial sites as well as offerings to the gods. The trail is impressive especially when you look at the rough terrain that the servants had to endure to bring the rocks from the shore line to create this massive trail. Walk the other direction along the coast line and you will find a small inlet called Ninole Bay another local favorite, fresh water ponds spill into the ocean during high tide and you're likely to encounter green sea turtles basking on the rocks and swimming in the pond.

Honu’apo (Whittington Beach Park) is just outside of Na'alehu.... Honu’apo was once a busy sugar cane center and the pier that today lays in shambles was once an important shipping facility. The sugar cane boom in Honu’apo lasted from the 1870’s to the late 1930’s. In 1940 a tsunami wiped out the pier and in 1948 the land was turned into a park. Here you will find picnic tables, bathroom and a shower. This is a great place to go after a trip to south point or the volcano. Honu’apo is one of the beaches that one can spot a Hawaiian Hawksbill sea turtle native to the Hawaiian Islands unlike the common green sea turtle. The turtles use the fresh water pond as a safe haven from the deep blue, here they rest and feed.

Hawaii Volcano National Park is a 45 minute drive from Hale Malulani and well worth visiting.
There over 150 miles of trails to venture as you take in the fresh air and breath taking sights… Kilauea Iki trail is one of our favorite loops. Also the drive to the end of chain of craters road is very scenic and has there are some huge pit craters to check out along the way. Visit the active volcano (when it’s erupting in the park) and watch Pele in action creating some of the newest land on Earth.

And of course we cant forget the cliffs at South Point (Kalae) Just a 15 mile drive from Hale Malulani..... Take the plunge……….. Jump off the southern most tip of the United States!

If you rented a 4x4 drive the coast line all the way to Green Sands Beach and beyond, or if your feeling adventurous walk it. If you’re lucky enough you may run into a Monk Seal basking on the shore. Between South Point and Green Sands you'll find Pinau Bay a small white sand beach with a protected crystal clear blue pool to relax and cool off in, a local favorite.
