Glasgow, Scotland, Ufalme wa Muungano

Highly renowned Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and Riverside Transport Museum are within 10 minutes walk, as is the University of Glasgow (main Campus). Excellent restaurants and quirky shops are in huge abundance, with Byers Road only 2 minutes walk away. If you are interested in browsing charity shops, you won't be disappointed, likewise with cafes and estate agents! Kelvingrove Park and the Botanic Gardens are also close by (with the river Kelvin that links them - well worth the walk), and also Ashton Lane is well worth a visit. Further away, the delights of Loch Lomond are about a 30 minutes' drive away with excellent outdoor activities & magnificent scenery! Edinburgh is easily accessible by bus, train or car, as is Stirling, as well as beaches and islands on the west coast.

Glasgow itself has 91 parks and green spaces, and has a rich heritage birthed on ship building and the industrial revolution. In 2014 this vibrant city proudly hosted the Commonwealth Games and has benefited from considerable investment. The 600,000 population of the City of Glasgow council area is known for its distinct dialect and the Commonwealth slogan 'People Make Glasgow'. The city also boasts a long heritage of scientific discovery, including famous scientists such as James Watt, Lord Kelvin, and many others. Highly renowned Glasgow University has been in the city since 1451 (fourth oldest in UK). Along with University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, Glasgow Royal Conservatoire and Glasgow School of Art, the city has a massive footprint in study and academic research. Over 17000 people are working in the arts community, making Glasgow second only to London in this sector. Check out SECC, SSE Hydro, Gallery of Modern Art, and the Lighthouse.

The original motto "Let Glasgow flourish by the preaching of his word and the praising of his name" contains a long-established characteristic of the city. The shortened version of this motto can be seen inscribed onto buildings and metalwork throughout the city.

If you are willing and able to explore more of the local community life, there are some excellent churches nearby with a wide range of international, and community-focused activities. Among these are Dowanvale Free Church, Re:hope, Glasgow Chinese Church, Sandyford Henderson, St Silas, The Tron @ Kelvingrove, among many others (listed in approx order of distance).

Alongside this booming city, more than half of Scotland's most deprived communities are found in the greater Glasgow area. Poverty, family breakdown, drug and alcohol abuse, low educational standards and poor health are all causes for this, yet there are organisations who are doing excellent work in bringing hope and practical help. You will discover that there are many charities who have outlets throughout the West End, and you are very welcome to support their work. Glasgow City Mission, Salvation Army and Hope for Glasgow, among others, have a vision for bringing hope to the city.

Having lived in Glasgow for 7 years (after living in SE England, Wales, Northern Ireland and East Asia) we know the value of hospitality and the need to travel. We originally came to live in Glasgow as guests ourselves and we have come to love and appreciate this special city. We love eating and all things creative, so being here in Glasgow's West End is a wonderful privilege. We also enjoy the international nature of this part of Glasgow's urban centre. We love meeting people from all over the world.
