Baadhi ya taarifa zimetafsiriwa kiotomati.
Madame Pompadour would approve: a richly carved solid-wood bed, antique mirrored armoire and enough Baroque flair to make bedtime an event. Warm patinas, sumptuous bedding and an original fireplace with romantic candles set the scene. Newly added air-conditioning keeps even royal favourites cool. Explore the Creuse countryside, retire in provincial 19th-century style, then wake to a generous homemade breakfast in our historic home. Court intrigue optional; croissants deserve your full attention.
Sehemu
Welcome to La Maison de la Grange, our stone home built around 1800 in a peaceful village in the heart of the Creuse. Carefully renovated in 2025–26, it combines two centuries of character with a thoroughly modern appreciation for comfortable beds and reliable plumbing.
Throughout the house, stone walls, exposed beams, oak floors, antiques and open-hearth fireplaces create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Cooler months invite fireside conversations; summer brings sunshine, fresh countryside air and the demanding business of deciding where to sit in the garden.
In La Chambre de Madame Pompadour, a richly carved European double bed, antique mirrored armoire and warm patinas provide just enough grandeur to make unpacking feel like taking up residence at court. The original fireplace is dressed with candles for romance. Any additional romantic arrangements are, naturally, your department.
Air-conditioning was installed in the room and shared living room in July 2026, because even royal favourites would have drawn the line at a French heatwave. Sink into inviting bedding after exploring the countryside, then wake to a generous homemade breakfast included with your stay. The croissants deserve your full attention.
The shared bathroom offers a rainfall showerhead, bathrobes and luxurious L’Occitane soaps. Enjoy the comforts, then make yourself at home in our shared living spaces or garden. Join us for a film, settle into the library with a book, or simply practise the fine French art of appearing thoughtfully occupied while doing absolutely nothing.
Dinner is an excellent reason to stay in. Our table d’hôtes meals are served between 18:00 and 21:00, with light and full menus, charcuterie boards, French classics and artisanal pizzas. Helen loves to cook, so ask what’s on the menu. Please reserve by 12:00 noon on the day, allowing time for everything to be freshly prepared. Culinary inspiration flourishes with a little notice.
With your meal, our licensed drinks service offers house and premium wines, Champagne from the cellar, beers, classic and signature cocktails, cognac and non-alcoholic options. Try the Madame Sévigné cocktail or mocktail; we trust Madame Pompadour will overlook the competition. Prefer supper or drinks in your room? Ask Helen to prepare and bring up your order. Purchases can be paid by credit card or added to your account. Even a small indulgence deserves convenient administration.
You will also meet our two exceptionally friendly resident dachshunds, who believe they own the house and have generously allowed us to manage it. They may greet you enthusiastically, lobby for a treat or attempt a cuddle. Every arrival is, in their opinion, a personal tribute. Please book only if you are comfortable sharing a home with dogs; their position in the household is permanent and entirely non-negotiable.
We enjoy good French food, wine, cognac, long conversations and sharing the story of why we fell in love with this corner of France. With more than 225 years behind it, the house has thick walls, a gently lived-in atmosphere and plenty of personality. It is not completely soundproof, so consideration for fellow guests helps everyone enjoy the peace. Guest rooms are upstairs, with stairs and no elevator: our modest contribution to balancing the breakfast pastries.
Beyond the house await spring poppies, grazing sheep, Limousin cattle, rolling countryside, quiet roads and historic villages. There is history around every corner, and very little pressure to experience it at speed.
Public parking is across from the church, a short walk from the house through our peaceful village. Arriving by motorcycle or electric bike? Ask whether we have space to store it in the grange. Your trusty steed may also appreciate historic accommodation.
Bienvenue to La Chambre de Madame Pompadour at La Maison de la Grange. Come for the countryside, settle in for the comfort, and prepare to explain to the dachshunds why you ever need to leave.
Ufikiaji wa mgeni
**MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME. THE DACHSHUNDS CERTAINLY HAVE.**
You’re welcome to enjoy our shared spaces: the **main kitchen, rustic kitchen, guest bathroom, dining room, air conditioned living room, library and garden**. Your private guest room is, of course, your own little kingdom. Dressing gowns are acceptable royal attire.
For larger laundry needs, we’ll happily recommend a local launderette. Our washing machine has the constitution of a delicate French aristocrat and does not respond well to unreasonable demands.
**REAL HOSTS. NO SECRET PASSWORDS.**
We’re here onsite to welcome you, so there are **no door codes to memorise** or mysterious combinations to decipher after a long journey. Your room has a **key and/or an interior lock** for privacy.
Our **master bedroom and master bathroom are clearly marked and private**. Even the hosts occasionally need somewhere to retreat and wonder where all the teaspoons have gone.
The communal spaces are shared in the friendly spirit of a traditional *chambres d’hôtes*: a home with company, conversation and the occasional dachshund inspecting proceedings.
**A FILM, THE NEWS… OR SOME HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS “HOLIDAY WORK”?**
Staying a few nights? Join us in the living room to catch up on the news or watch a film. You’re also welcome to settle at a desk in the library if work calls.
We may gently question the appearance of a laptop on holiday. There may be a raised eyebrow. Possibly two.
As fellow business owners, however, we completely understand “just answering one email” and resurfacing forty-five minutes later.
**NEED SOMETHING? JUST ASK.**
Questions, local recommendations or a little help during your stay? We’re always happy to help. Please approach the human hosts; the dachshunds have enthusiasm but very limited administrative skills.
Wakati wa ukaaji wako
Need a hand, have a question or encountered a little hiccup? Message Helen through Airbnb—she receives notifications immediately and will be happy to help. No carrier pigeon required.
Before you arrive, please share any breakfast preferences, allergies or food sensitivities, and let Helen know if you would like to reserve a table d’hôtes meal. A little advance notice helps us prepare for you properly—and breakfast is far too important to leave to guesswork.
Helen and Dave are Canadian, and Helen is also Dutch, so your stay comes with a little international flavour, including the conversation. Helen does her best in French, though you may notice a Québécois accent, some unexpected vocabulary and the occasional thoughtful silence as she and Dave train their ears to keep up with French spoken at full local speed.
Between English, French and Dutch, Helen’s brain occasionally stages a small rebellion towards the end of the day. If you catch a slightly vacant stare, please don’t be alarmed: your hostess is temporarily buffering. A café au lait usually brings her back online. Thank you for your patience while the language department reboots.
Our guests are wonderfully varied: people travelling for work, attending cultural workshops, house hunting, visiting family or simply breaking a long journey north, south, east or west. Others come specifically for the Creuse’s open skies, space, outdoor activities and cultural discoveries. Whether we’re a welcome overnight pause or your base for a longer adventure, we’re delighted to have you here.
If you enjoy a conversation, so do we. We love hearing about your background, your work and what has brought you to this corner of France. Helen is particularly partial to history and geopolitics; current events rarely leave her short of material. She also runs another business across time zones, so check-in, breakfast and quieter moments between table d’hôtes service are usually the best opportunities for a chat. Occasionally, her working day is on another continent even though her feet are firmly in the Creuse.
Helen doesn’t usually sit down for the full evening meal. There is a kitchen to manage, and if she ate every menu she prepared, elasticated waistbands would become a business expense. She will often join you for a glass of wine and dessert once the kitchen is sufficiently cleared and the dogs’ beloved balls have been retired for the night. The dachshunds consider every throw the beginning of negotiations for another.
Wondering what to explore? Helen can suggest a personalised itinerary based on your interests and the length of your stay. As a trained historian, she loves introducing guests to the stories, places and people that shaped the Creuse and Saint-Martial-le-Mont. Expect fascinating background, local suggestions and absolutely no exam at the end.
Whatever brings you here, Helen and Dave look forward to sharing their home and helping you make the most of your stay. Bring your plans, your questions, your conversation—or simply your intention to relax.
Mambo mengine ya kukumbuka
TABLE D’HOTES
If you arrange for our amazing Table d’Hôtes supper in the evening, meal time can be between 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. We have Light and full menu options for our guests, and charcuterie board for snacking, but need advance booking (12 noon prior) for preparation.
**STAIRS INCLUDED. ELEVATOR STILL AWAITING THE APPROVAL OF LOUIS XIV.**
Our historic home offers charm, character and a complimentary opportunity to work off your croissants.
**All guest rooms are on the second or third floors, accessible by stairs only. There is no elevator.** The original architect was apparently travelling very lightly.
If you have mobility difficulties, please consider whether the stairs will be suitable for you before booking. We offer a warm welcome, but our negotiations with gravity have been unsuccessful.
**BRINGING A DOG? A WORD FROM THE MANAGEMENT.**
Our two friendly resident dachshunds consider themselves the rightful owners of the house. We merely pay the bills.
Following extensive negotiations, they have graciously agreed to welcome **one additional dog per reservation**. More than that becomes stressful for everyone, and we are running a chambres d’hôtes, not chairing an emergency session of the canine parliament.
**And cats? Ah. A delicate diplomatic matter.**
Dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers and rabbits, and ours remain surprisingly committed to their ancestral job description. They may interpret a visiting cat as an assignment.
Cats are therefore **not recommended**. If you choose to bring one, you do so at your own risk, and your cat must remain in your room. We cannot promise that a polite *bonjour* will establish diplomatic relations.
**The guest dog supplement is €10 per day.** The dachshunds call this their management fee.
For clarity, this charge is displayed in our **Gîtes de France listing, at the property, inside the house and in the welcome booklet in each guest room**.
We have stopped just short of announcing it with the church bells.
All additional charges are payable before departure and may be paid by credit/debit card or in cash.
Thank you for your understanding.
