Cocketts Holiday Cottage - a delightful 16th century pink country cottage tucked away on a quiet lane in the heart of rural Suffolk. Cosy, comfortable and tranquil, with beams, logburning stove and large garden with chickens, pygmy goats and playhouse. Thoughtfully equipped with all you'll need for a relaxing 'get-away-from-it-all' break. New for 2021 games room with full-size pool table! Full refund if cancellation due to COVID-19 situation.

Cocketts is a 16th century listed cottage nestled at the end of a country lane in the heart of Suffolk. It has oak beams, wonky floors and a large inglenook fireplace with log burning stove. It is cosy, comfortable and warm and has much 'character'. It is equipped to a high standard with all mod-cons expected these days; wi-fi, TV and DVD, comfy seating, quality linen, an attic den with PS3 and books, games and toys for all ages. Just through the back door is a recently converted outhouse with full-sized pool table.

Sleeping 6 in 2 king-size bedrooms, and a twin, there is also a double and single futon, if needed in the attic den, making 8 guests (or even 9 at a push) an option. One of the king-size beds can be made into 2 singles if preferred. We have a highchair, travel cot and stair-gates if needed.

From the back door there is an enclosed 'safe' area of garden for little ones which has the benefit of a wooden playhouse and outdoor toys. Here there is a also patio and wooden table and chairs to enjoy the evening sun. Beyond the enclosed garden there is a large lawned area for ball games, and beyond is a large pond, and an old orchard with tree swing and picnic table, which provides for further adventure or relaxation. The acre of garden is visited by a wide variety of birds and wildlife, and in season provides apples, pears, sloes, quince, walnuts and damsons. We keep chickens and friendly pygmy goats that are always keen for attention.

There are walks from the door, perfect if you are bringing the dog, and it is easy and flat for cycling.

Despite a feeling of being 'in the middle of nowhere', Cocketts is easy to get to , and is well placed for exploring the many local picturesque villages, the Suffolk heritage coast, Constable Country, as well as Norwich, Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds. Suffolk has a wealth of farmers' markets, pubs and restaurants that pride themselves on local produce that will keep you well fed. There are plenty of places of interest to visit, and books, maps and information is kept up to date to help you make the most of your stay.

Cocketts itself has an interesting history with links to the early Quakers and the English Civil War.

Suffolk, Ufalme wa Muungano

The lane is a mile long and Cocketts is 1 of only 6 houses on the lane. Being at the end of a no-through road it is quiet; usually we'll have more horses passing than cars. The mid-Suffolk footpath runs along the side of the garden, and there is an easy flat walk into the village of Mendlesham along a wide track that takes half an hour or so. Mendlesham is an ancient village with an interesting Church with unique armoury. There is a village shop, fish and chip shop, pub, and hairdressers. The village hosts an annual May Fair on May Bank Holiday with traditional May Queen.

Tan Office has a fascinating history, rooted in non conformity. It was once a Quaker settlement visited by both George Fox and George Whitehead, founders and chroniclers of the early Quaker movement.

There are a number of great little country pubs within a 10 minute drive, and lots of places to visit nearby.

My husband, Doug, and I have lived here in rural Suffolk since the mid-1990’s, and brought up our family here. I’ve worked in General Practice and Doug has worked in BT’s research establishment locally all that time. The first time we saw our house we thought it was a little haven. It is a wonderful place to be - very much ‘away from it all’, but not too far from the conveniences of everyday life. When the opportunity to purchase the neighbouring house arose, we jumped at it, initially because our house had always sat within Cocketts garden, and so space was quite limited. Having sorted out the gardens in a more sensible way - both now have close to an acre each- we decided that Cocketts was an ideal property for a holiday home. We now love that our guests can also enjoy a little of this special haven - both young and old, friends and families, from home and abroad. We continue to work full-time, and our now grown-up children are sometimes here, so we’ll just be your normal neighbours - happy to lend a hand or advice, but generally out and about with our otherwise busy lives!

We live next door; we may wave or pop out to say hello as you arrive but often we will be at work. We are very happy to be contacted if you need anything, or have any questions. Although the houses are close, neither feels overlooked. We are on hand to help with any problems, and are happy to advise about places to visit if you wish, but we won't crowd you!
