VILLAGE DESCRIPTION Here at the border with Italian-speaking Switzerland, locals and visitors cherish the relaxed atmosphere, the spirit of great painters – the nature and culture of the pass landscape, and traditionally made sausages. As starting point of the Engadin Ski Marathon, Maloja is also a paradise for cross-country skiers. The little village at the top of the eponymous pass leading to the unspoilt Val Bregaglia is heaven for children – and their parents, too. At the tourist information office you can book pizza-baking courses for kids and the sunny local ski area, Aela, is also wonderfully family-friendly. But not only families feel at home in this glorious natural setting. The fascinating play of light and shadow has long attracted artists. Giovanni Segantini chose the landscape around Maloja as the subject for many of his paintings, and made the village is final home. Another artist who worked here was Giovanni Giacometti, the father of Alberto. Their spirit continues to inspire visitors to this day, through exhibitions, readings and concerts.
